IIT JAM 2024 exam pattern was announced by IIT Madras along with the exam notification in the information brochure. The exam was held online as a computer-based test (CBT) on February 11, 2024, in two slots. The first/forenoon and afternoon slot of the exam were completed by 12:30 PM and 5:30 PM respectively.

There were a total of 60 questions carrying a total of 100 marks. The entire paper was divided into three sections: A, B and C. IIT JAM 2024 exam was conducted to test the student's subject knowledge, which they have studied in their respective course's udergraduate degree. The questions were asked in the format of MCQ (Multiple choice questions), MSQ (Multiple Select Questions) and NAT (Numerical Answer Type Questions).

All sections were compulsory. Eligible PwD candidates were given one-hour compensatory time and the assistance of scribe for the examination as per the guidelines of Government of India. Candidates can get the complete information about IIT JAM examination pattern here on this page.

A candidate can appear in either ONE or TWO Test Paper (s). However, a candidate can appear in two Test Papers only if they are not scheduled in the same session.         

 

Q:   When will IIT JAM 2024 examination will be conducted?

A:

Joint Admission test for Masters (JAM) has been established as a benchmark for the undergraduate level Science education in the country from last two decades. The objective of JAM is to provide admissions to Post- graduate Degree Programmes and to consolidate Science as a career option for the students across the country.

IIT JAM 2024 examination for the academic session 2024-2025 will be conducted by IIT Madras, the examination conducting body. Aspirants who had earlier filled the JAM 2024 application form with the required eligibility will be able to give the JAM 2024 examination. IIT JAM 2024 examination is scheduled to be held on February 11, 2024. JAM 2024 is a Computer Based Test (CBT) to be conducted in SEVEN Test Papers at the undergraduate level.

Q:   What type of questions does Section B of IIT JAM exam have?

A:

JAM 2024 Examination will be conducted in SEVEN subjects, also referred to as Test Papers; Biotechnology (BT), Chemistry (CY), Economics (EN), Geology (GG), Mathematics (MA),  Mathematical Statistics (MS), and Physics (PH). The medium for all the Test Papers is English only.

JAM 2024 examination pattern is divoded in such a way that the exam will be conducted in the form of three sections ie., Section A, B and C.

Section - B contains a total of 10 Multiple Select Questions (MSQs) carrying two marks each. Each MSQ is similar to MCQ but with the difference that MSQ may have one or more than one correct choice (s) out of the four given choices. The candidate is awarded full credit only if all the correct answer (s) and no wrong answers are selected. Candidates can mark the answer (s) by clicking the choice (s). There is no negative marking or partial marking for MSQ.

JAM 2024 Examination for all the Test Papers will be conducted as a Computer Based Test  (CBT) where the candidates will be shown the questions in a random sequence on a computer screen.

Section - A contains a total of 30 Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs) involving 10 questions of one mark each and 20 questions of two marks each. Each MCQ has four choices out of which only one choice is the correct answer. Candidates can mark their answer by clicking one of the choices. A wrong answer will result in negative marks. For each wrong answer to 1 mark
questions, 1/3 mark will be deducted and similarly for each wrong answer to 2 marks questions,  2/3 mark will be deducted.

 

Q:   What type of question does Section C of IIT JAM exam has?

A:

There will be a total of 60 questions carrying a total of 100 marks. The entire paper will be divided into three sections, A, B and C. All sections are compulsory. Questions in each section will be of different types as given below:

Section - C contains a total of 20 Numerical Answer Type (NAT) questions involving 10 questions of one mark each and 10 questions of two marks each. For NAT questions, the answer is a signed real number, which needs to be entered using the virtual numeric keypad displayed on the monitor. No choices will be shown for NAT questions. There is no negative marking for NAT.

 

IIT JAM 2024 Pattern of Test Papers

IIT JAM 2024 exam pattern states that each test paper is of three hours duration. In the exam, candidates need to attempt 60 questions which were of 100 marks weightage. These 60 questions are divided into three sections – A, B, and C. All these sections are compulsory and candidates need to attempt questions from all the sections. The medium of instruction for JAM test papers is English.

IIT JAM 2024 Marking Scheme

The number of questions and the corresponding marks allotted to them is as listed in the table below:

Q:   Will marks be deducted for unanswered questions in IIT JAM 2024?

A:

According to the IIT JAM 2024 exam pattern, there will be no deduction of marks for unanswered questions. Such questions will not be taken into consideration while calculating the total marks of a candidate. Hence, if candidates are not sure about the answer of a question, it is better to leave it unattempted rather than doing a guess work, to avoid negative marking. Also, candidates are advised to revise the JAM exam sheet on the computer screen before submitting it .  

 

IIT JAM 2024 Negative Markings

Candidates are informed that there will be a negative marking in IIT JAM 2024. Marks in each section of the exam would be deducted as per the scheme mentioned below. 

  • Section A: For each wrong answer to one mark question, 1/3 mark will be deducted. On the other hand, for each wrong answer to two marks questions, 2/3 mark will be deducted. There is no negative marking for any questions left unanswered.
  • Section B: There is no negative marking in this section. Also, there is no partial marking provision in this section.
  • Section C: There is no negative marking in this section, as well.

Note: Candidates needed to select the answer for MCQ and MSQ-type questions. To enter the answer to NAT questions candidates can only use a mouse on a virtual numeric keypad. At the end of three hours, the computer will automatically close the examination, informs the official website.

It may also be noted that candidates are allowed to use the online virtual calculator in the IIT JAM 2023 exam. Therefore, candidates are recommended not to carry any calculators with them to their IIT JAM 2023 exam centre. Candidates will be provided with a scribble pad for rough work. Candidates need to return this scribble pad at the end of the examination.

Q:   What is the duration of IIT JAM 2024?

A:

A. IIT JAM is of three hours duration. The national-level Science entrance exam will be conducted in two sessions, which are as follows:

IIT Madras,  the examination conducting body will be conducting IIT JAM 2024 for the academic year 2024-2026 on February 11, 2024. Aspirants of IIT JAM 2024 examination must go through the exam pattern carefully, before starting the preapartion.

As per the examination authority, IIT Madras will be conducting the JAM 2024 exam for seven subjects. Before filling up the application form canididates are requested to kindly suit themselves according to the eligibility criteria of the examination.

The JAM 2024 examination will be conducted in such a way that the question paper for each subject will have 60 questions. These 60 questions will eb in the format of MCQ, MSQ and NAT type.

Q:   What are the other miscellaneous information about IIT JAM 2024 examination pattern?

A:

In all sections, questions not attempted will result in zero mark. There is no provision for partial marking. The candidates are required to select the answer (s) for MCQ and MSQ type questions using the mouse. The answer for NAT questions must be entered using a mouse on a virtual numeric keypad. The keyboard of the computer will be disabled.
There is a provision for using online virtual calculator. Candidates are not allowed to bring their own calculators.
A scribble pad will be provided for rough work. Candidates have to write their name and registration number before using it. The scribble pad has to be returned at the end of the examination. The examination will end automatically after the stipulated time. Candidates are required to adhere to the code of conduct specified in Annexure III (Code of Conduct).
