IIT JAM Exam Analysis 2026: Check Subject-wise JAM Paper Analysis (Slot 1 & 2), Difficulty Level, Weightage

As IIT Bombay is the examination conducting body of the JAM 2026 exam, candidates go through the following analysis on the overall exam difficulty level is on a moderate level. Conceptual questions were asked in the exam where the candidate's analytical and abstract thinking of the applied subject was put to the test.

IIT JAM Chemistry Subject Analysis (Previous Year)

The negative marking scheme is as follows:

Section A: For each wrong answer to a one-mark question, 1/3 mark will be deducted. On the other hand, for each wrong answer to two-mark questions, 2/3 marks will be deducted. There is no negative marking for any questions left unanswered.

Section B: There is no negative marking in this section. Also, there is no partial marking provision in this section.

Section C: There is no negative marking in this section, as well.

Candidates who will be appearing in the IIT JAM 2026 Exam for 7 MSc courses may find the exam moderate. Questions will be designed in such a manner to test their analytical and practical approach to the concerned subject. 

IIT JAM Shift 1 Analysis (Previous Year)

Mayank Shukla: The overall difficulty level of IIT JAM Mathematics subject was found to be moderate. The topics that were found to lengthy were Group Theory and Integral Calculus. Most of the questions came from the subject group theory.

Memory Based Questions: Exception and ranges between the sn in the group theory.

Kushal: Appeared for IIT JAM Mathematics subject. The overall exam difficulty level was found be higher than the previous year. Most of the questions body found to be lengthy and were not one-liners or directly topic-based. More of an analytical approach was needed to answer the questions. Applied mathematics questions were asked more. Group theory subject questions were more frequently asked. IIT JAM Cut off for Mathematics will be around 20-25.

Tanu: JAM exam difficulty level was easy to moderate for Mathematics subject. Differential Equation topics were asked in the examination. JAM Mathematics cut off expected to be in the range of 30-40.

Pragati: Moderate-level questions were asked from differential equations in JAM Mathematics exam. Linear transformation and liner algebra questions were also asked. The mathematics question paper was lengthy

IIT JAM Mathematics Exam Analysis (Based on Previous Year)

1. Paper was found to be moderately tough.
2. Numerical Answer Type (NAT) found to be very difficult by most of the IIT JAM Mathematics candidates.
3. MCQ questions that were asked in the section A and section B were also found to be very difficult to answer. More tricky types questions were asked.
4. MSQ section was doable.

IIT JAM Mathematics detailed exam analysis: Section wise

Section A: 5-6 questions were asked as straightforward MCQ questions.

Geometry and Topology (GT):

1. Order> or equal to 6.

Ordinary Differential Equation:

1. Group of order 39 has exactly one subgroup of order 3 and 13. G cannot be Boolean as 13 has an element of order.
2. Bernoulli Theorem.
3. U(8)= U(12)- isomorphisim

Section A: Moderate

Chemistry: According to the students the IIT JAM Chemistry Question Paper was comparatively lengthy. The exam can be categorised as Moderate to Difficult. According to the students who appeared in the exam, the good attempts for the IIT JAM Chemistry Question Paper can be considered as 25-30 questions with 90% accuracy. The IIT JAM Chemistry expected cutoff this year might be in between 25 to 30 marks , according to some coaching institutes.

Khushi: IIT JAM Biotechnology exam difficulty level was moderate. In Biology questions from Immunology, Genetics, Recombinant DNA Technology topics were asked. In sections, i.e., NAT, both physics and mathematics questions were asked. Section A and B was comparatively easy than Section C.

Sudarshan: IIT JAM Economics subject exam difficulty level was easier than last year. Some direct questions were asked from liquidity preference money supply and few were asked about consumer and supplier chain product.

Economics: The exam difficulty level as compared from previous year was easy, however, the questions came this year were quite lengthy. NAT type questions took longer time to solve. In macroeconomics, ISLM had the maximum weightage and many questions were there on matrices. The IIT JAM Economics cut off will be higher than last year cut off.

Mathematical Statistics: The Mathematical Statistics paper was of moderate to tough level of difficulty. The questions were on the expected lines and the topics of questions were  Probability Theory, Statistical Theory, and Numericals, among others.

Memory Based Questions: Two questions were on producer and consumer surplus graph (standard supply-demand graph). Candidates needed to find the value of the surplus and the change in the surplus.
