Shanmugha Arts, Science, Technology & Research Academy, or SASTRA Deemed University Thanjavur, is one of the popular deemed-to-be universities in Tamil Nadu. SASTRA University Thanjavur was founded in 1984 as Shanmugha College of Engineering and accredited by NAAC A++ Grade. It is also recognised as a Category I institution by the UGC. The engineering programmes offered by the university are recognised by the Institution of Engineering & Technology (IET), UK and the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE). The Government of India has also recognised the university as a Scientific & Industrial Research Organisation. SASTRA Thanjavur is ranked 51 by NIRF 2025 under the Overall category, 29 by NIRF 2025 under the University category, and 40 by NIRF 2025 under the Engineering category.

The university has two branches, namely the Shanmugha Polytechnic College and the Srinivasa Ramanujan Centre. Shanmugha Polytechnic College is a part of the SASTRA University main campus, while the Srinivasa Ramanujan College is located in Kumbakonam, Tamil Nadu. SASTRA also comprises several schools and centres, through which it offers various undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral programmes across different streams such as Science, Engineering, Medicine, Education, Arts, Law and Management. BTech, MTech and MBA are the popular programmes. The university also offers online and distance education programmes. SASTRA online and distnace learning courses include BCom, BBA, BCA, MBA, MSc, and MA, among others.

The SASTRA Tanjore admissions are both merit and entrance-based. SASTRA College accepts the scores of several national-level entrance exams, such as CAT and JEE Main for admission to its specific courses. SASTRA Deemed University Thanjavur, has collaborated with many international universities and industries to facilitate students' internships in their final semester. At the undergraduate level, this deemed University offers BTech across 30 specialisations along with Integrated MTech across two specialisations. Spread over four years and eight semesters, admission to BTech is possible at SASTRA Deemed University via two methods:

Stream 1: JEE Mains + Class 12 marks (50% weightage given to each), for admission to 50% of the total seats

Stream 2: Class 12 marks (100% weightage), for admission to the remaining 50%
