Kharagpur, West Bengal, India, is home to the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT Kharagpur). The institution was founded in 1951 and was the very first IIT designated as such by the government. The Government of India recognised it as an Institute of Eminence in 2019.
Following India's independence in 1947, the institution was founded to provide a place to learn. However, the school has expanded its curriculum to include courses in business, law, architecture, the humanities, etc. The 2,100 acres campus of IIT Kharagpur is home to over 22,000.
IIT Kharagpur Campus
Located 120 km west of Kolkata, IIT Kharagpur is India's major academic and technological hub. The Kharagpur Railway Station is within 5 km of the university in the West Midnapore area. The current site and its buildings were designed by a team of engineers and architects led by Swiss architect Werner M. Moser.
Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Kharagpur is built over an area of 8.7-square-kilometre (2,100-acre) campus and has a number of facilities for the students. The facilities include one of the largest and the finest technical libraries in Asia, eateries (Subway, Cafe Coffee Day (CCD), Baskin Robbins Ice Cream Parlour), Gym, Techno Film Society, Bank/ ATM, Medical facility, etc. Also, the college has 22 halls of residences where 15 are for boys, 5 for girls, and 2 for general. The facilities of these halls of residence include kitchen and mess.
About 22,000 people call the 8.5 square kilometres site home. About 605 professors, 1,933 staff, and 10,010 undergraduate and graduate students called IIT Kharagpur home in 2015.
About 34 miles of paved roads across the campus are constructed. By the year 2020, the institute anticipates implementing a green policy. Both sides of Scholars Avenue, which runs from the institution entrance to the BC Roy Technology Hospital, are home to 22 separate student dormitories. The PAN loop, also known as Old Campus, consists of the oldest three halls (Patel, Azad, and Nehru) and can be found close to Scholar's Avenue.
Undergraduate males have 10 options (MMM, LBS, RP, RK, MS, LLR, HJB, Patel, Azad, and Nehru), while females have two to choose from. There are many graduate students' dormitories, four reserved for women (RLB, Gokhle, Nivedita, and SAM), four for research scholars (BCR, VS, BRH, and JCB), and one for academics from the military services.
The extension centre in Kolkata serves as a location for the Institute's distance learning courses, guesthouses, and continuing education programs, complementing the main campus in KharaTheat, the Institute's Rajarhat, Kolkata, the extension provides full-time undergraduate and graduate classes centre.

Accommodations for Residents:
The expansive dorms of IIT KGP are well-known on campus. IIT Kharagpur has over 10,000 students living on its massive campus of 2,100 acres. There are a total of 21 residence halls on campus, 16 of which are designated as male and 5 as female. Modern, cutting-edge dorms include the LBS and MMM buildings completed in 2010.
Girls' dorms are located in a convenient area, not far from essentials like a library, gym, theater, and police station. Married Scholars and their families may stay in Zakir Hussain Hall. The Halls provide tenants with various amenities, such as High-Speed LAN, Wi-Fi, and continuous power.

On-campus venues for sports as varied as hockey, football, cricket, and athletics can be found at the Jnan Ghosh Stadium and the Tata Sports Complex. In addition to this, there is a fully updated Aquatic Center on campus, where sports like swimming and water polo may be played.
The Student Activity Center: Technology Students' Gymkhana also has a Weightlifting area, a Basketball Court, a Volleyball Court, and a Table Tennis area, in addition to an Indoor Squash Court, Indoor Badminton Courts, Pool Tables, and Tennis Courts.

Yes, Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur offers a BArch programme of five-year duration to students who have qualified JEE Main (paper-II) followed by JEE Advanced. Aspirants qualifying the JEE Advanced exam need to qualify Architecture Aptitude Test (AAT) conducted by IIT Kharagpur for admission to the BArch programme followed by JoSAA counselling.
