Hostel Facilities at IIT Kharagpur
All the resident halls at IIT Kharagpur have 24X7 internet connectivity, and most of them have a common room, music room, library, sports, and cultural facilities.
IIT Kharagpur is an institution with residential hostels administered by wardens and assistant wardens with the help of hall managers and supervisors. The accommodation is also known as The Hall Management Center of IIT Kharagpur. There are on-campus residence halls for the students of IIT- Kharagpur and two-family accommodations for students with families.
Catering service is provided by the regular hall staff members in some of the halls, and for the remaining halls, it has been outsourced to private agencies. Cleaning service is outsourced for all the halls of residence. All the halls have 24X7 internet connectivity, and most of them have a common room, music room, library, sports, and cultural facilities. There are various inter-hall events like Illumination, Rangoli, and Garden competitions arranged by Technology Gymkhana. Separate guest house facilities are also available at IIT Kharagpur.

IIT Kharagpur library collection consists of back-volumes of periodicals, books, theses, conference proceedings, reports, standards, microforms, CD-ROM/DVD-ROM Databases, and various audiovisual materials. The Library has a collection of more than 3.5 Lacs documents, several abstracting databases, and others. Besides, there are more than 2 Lacs e-books. The library has two buildings, the main building, and the other building. Theses, books, and standards are kept in the main building.

Student Engagement Activities at IIT Kharagpur
There are many clubs on campus where the students can mingle with one another sharing common interests. There is no concept of an in-time in hostels, allowing students to pursue moonshots in different technical clubs or just goof around on campus (The food court stays open until 4 am in the morning). Boys are allowed in girls' hostels and vice-versa until 12 AM.

Q. How will you be allotted a room if you are a new student at IIT- Kharagpur?
A. Report to the hall allotted to you and contact the hall manager or supervisor, who will allot a room to you. You will have basic furniture provided by HMC. For bachelor accommodation, the furniture includes a bed, a computer-cum-study table and a chair. In family accommodation, two single-bed or double beds, a computer table, and two chairs are provided. Note that mattresses, bedding, blankets, and pillows are not provided. Your hall managers will help you out with the details.

Also, some halls (hostel is referred to as hall of residence at IIT Kharagpur and hostellers as boarders) have washing machine facilities and some don’t. Laundry service is available at a reasonable price.
Q. Are there any transport facilities at IIT Kharagpur?
A. On weekdays, there is an internal bus service to move students to and fro between halls of residence and classrooms.
Q. Is there a provision to stay outside of the residential halls at IIT Kharagpur?
A. There is a proper channel to apply for such requests. Once you receive the approval you will need to pay the approval, hall overhead (HOH) charges and any hall budget contribution without any exemption.
Q. What are the safety measures at the halls of IIT Kharagpur?
A. All new halls (LBS, BRH, NVH new blocks) are equipped with fire safety facilities like fire detection control panels, fire sensors, indicators, firefighting hoses, water valves and pumps, etc. There are elevators in some halls. There are emergency exits in case of fire.
Q. Are the mess facilities taxed at IIT Kharagpur?
A. HMC-run messes do not generate profit and charge students by calculating the actual cost of raw items, gas and other expenses. Thus, food items prepared in HMC run messes are not taxed. However, when the raw materials are purchased by the hall, the vendor/supplier gives bills including any applicable taxes.
Q. What items are provided by the Hall of Residence?
A. HMC supplies all mess/kitchen equipment and utensil to new halls. Some new halls have geysers fitted in the bathrooms. HOH is meant to be used to purchase new equipment like geysers, water purifiers, water coolers, etc., and maintain existing mess equipment.
Q. What are the mess charges?
A. The mess charges are INR 12000 per year.
