There were a lot of departures in NIFT Entrance Examination 2017 for the Design stream from the previous year, however, the Technology & the Management streams remained consistent.
To start with, the first sitting of Creative Ability Test (CAT) was comparatively tougher than last year. This year the focus was a lot more on testing the students’ over all expertise of drawing abilities, sense of perspective, technicalities of drawing and creative visualisation and rendering abilities.
The paper had three questions, each with a choice of three options. The first question was from the ‘Space Design’ category: The students had to draw any one of the following scenes:
- The view of the traffic signal from inside the car.
- A street play being organised.
- A community festival celebration.
In case, of choosing the first option, the sense of perspective would be of utmost importance while the second would need one to focus on building a concept and telling a story. In the second option, it is advisable to also bring the focus to the cause that the street play is advocating for, apart from the technicalities of space design. Where in first, the crowd with vehicles need more attention, in the second, the crowd in general would be more focal. Nuances like street hawkers, beggars, various private & public vehicles (may be overloaded), stray animals will add to the composition. In the third option, the choice of festival could be varied from Lohri to holi to diwali et al...it primarily looks into the upcoming trend of urban living in residential complexes and of course rural India always celebrates together. Though nothing was specified, it is acceptable to attempt the same in either b/w or colour, however, the later would make a better statement.

The second question was based on visual graphics, where the students had to illustrate in colour a print on a T-shirt based on any one of the following:
- Music is the soul of life.
- Save future wild life.
- Dignity to aged.
This question needed the visual to make a statement as a print for a T-shirt, like a personal statement by the wearer to the cause, with an interesting visual with a very crisp personalised caption, the lack of which would make it look like a poster.
The third question, was a communication through doodle kind, where the students had to express the contrast between the given pair of words through two separate visuals in given boxes. Out of the given three, one was to be attempted:
- Balanced/ Unbalanced
- Crispy/ Soggy
- Cluttered/ Uncluttered
No, where did it specify that the contrast had to be expressed through same concept in both the visuals.

The second paper of General Ability test (GAT) has undergone a change in pattern with the total number of questions being slashed to 100 only for BDes & 120 only for MDes While retaining the same time frame of 2 hours. For the BDes, the 100 questions were divided into 5 sections with a mix of 15 Questions in Business Domain, 15 Ques. In reasoning. 20 ques. in comprehension across 4 passages, 20 questions in Quantitative and 30 ques in General English. MDes had a few more across sections to make it 120. The toughness level of paper was also keeping in mind that the students should be able to approach the paper. Where Maths concentrated upon testing the students on their calculation ability, reasoning focused more on their logical and thinking faculties. Passages, though were not lengthy, had indirect questions which required the students to process the information before they answered the same.
The Management & Technology papers didn’t see any change and were same as in previous format having 150 questions to be attempted in 180 minutes, with various sections of Case Study, Business Domain, Quantitative, Comprehension, General English & Reasoning.
This year, the paper was quite balanced, in keeping with the requisites of NIFT and the best would now go to the second stages of Situation test (for BDes) & GDPI (for MDes, MFTech & MFM), which would further comprise of 20% for former and 30% for the later, in the final merit list. For the BFTech, however Written is the only make or break stage.
The results are expected around the third week of March 2017, following which the stage two would be conducted Between April 3rd week to May mid 2017, after the board examinations are over. The Final result is expected around mid-May 2017 with the counselling scheduled for June 2017.
Wishing All the Luck once again!

The NIFT entrance exam is considered moderately difficult. The level of difficulty of the exam depends on a student's strengths and preparation. Since seats are limited and competition is high, even average questions feel tougher due to the pressure.
