NID DAT (Prelims) 2018 entrance exam pattern was an interesting format and as typical of NID, certainly not a predictable one at that. The General Aptitude section focussed majorly on the awareness and reasoning aspects with a good measure of puzzles thrown in.

The clincher as usual would be the Design Aptitude section. In the BDes Paper, the DAT segments consisted of three questions:
The first question had a composition in black & white silhouette of a bottle, a box and a cup. The students were supposed to render the same in the glass, paper and wood, exhibiting the same through shading only. The students had a choice of pairing the object with the materials of their own liking. Here the illustration skills and ability to detail and maintain proportions would be the key assessment factors.

The second question required the students to illustrate a rescue operation of a middle aged woman and her two children aged 4 and 7, who get caught in a building which has caught fire, due to short circuit, in its ground floor which is spreading to its first floor. The survivors are caught on the first floor. The rescue had to be conceptualised using a scooter, 5 feet ladder and a 12 feet rope. There rescue of the woman and the kids had to be illustrated in two separate blocks. This question truly tested not only the drawing skills of the candidates but also presence of mind and ability to think on their feet.
The third question was equally interesting, ‘An 8 year old child by mistake sowed corn and peas seed together. Waking up the next morning, he was stunned to see what he saw and couldn’t believe his eyes whether what he saw was real or his wild imagination. He quickly drew the same.’ The aspirants were asked to imagine and draw what the child drew. Here, there are two important considerations, (a) the drawing that we are depicting should look like the one drawn from the eyes of 8 year old. (b) we must remember that two seeds sown together will not result into a hybrid plant rather it would be a jumble of the two plants and their characteristics around each other.
The MDes GAT segment in NID Entrance Exam again had lot of analytical reasoning and some quantitative analysis questions. The MDes DAT segment comprised of 3 questions.
The first question asked the aspirants to write a short story using the given words i.e. comb, matchsticks, ice creams, scissors & potato. One had to depict the story through a visual as well. This question was of 8 marks. This question aims at testing the student’s command over language, narration abilities, creative imagination and also the ability to translate the imagination into an interesting plot. Also one should have been able to identify the crux of the story and depict the same through visual instead of giving the depiction of any fringe element. It is advisable to have titled the story as well.
The second question asked the candidates to draw 3 images in which one is seen using only index finger and thumb and name the same too. This carried 10 marks. This question looks to see the smart thinking abilities along with illustration skills of the student. Some examples could be: wearing a spectacle, screwing an ear piece, handling a bed switch, handling a needle, applying bindi, peeling a banana and many more. This question saw a comeback to the paper after good 6-7 years.
The third question was equally interesting, ‘A tyre company has manufactured more tyres than its demand and now they need to use their surplus stock of tyres in different ways. The tyre sizes were from 4mm to 10mm.’ The students could fold, cut or bend the tyres. This question carried the maximum of all, 12 marks! One had to provide four solutions. This question aims at assessing the creative imagination and critical thinking of the candidates. Here one could use more than one tyre together in a single use shown. Also the size is an important consideration.
The results are expected around February- March 2018, following which the stage two, DAT(Mains) would be conducted Between April 3rd week to May mid 2018, after the board examinations are over. The Final result is expected around mid May 2018 with the joining by June 2018.
Wishing aspirants - All the Luck once again!
