Meet Aman Bansal, JEE Advanced 2016 Topper with an AIR 1. In an interview with Shiksha, this topper talks about his preparation strategies, future plans and more.

Meet Aman Bansal, JEE Advanced 2016 Topper with an AIR (All India Rank) 1. A resident of Jaipur, Rajasthan, Aman secured a 320 marks in the JEE Advanced, whose results were declared on June 12, 2016.

Aiming to pursue CSE from IIT Bombay, this topper believes that maintaining a healthy competition amongst your peer group can help you succeed. Son of an engineering father and a homemaker mother, Aman studied for minimum 5 hours and maximum 9 hours a day to succeed in the exam.

In a short interview with Shiksha.com, Aman Bansal talks about his preparation strategies and future plans. Read the interview below.

Q. Congrats on your achievement. So, how do you feel being the AIR 1 Topper of JEE Advanced 2016?

A. I am just overwhelmed. I am very happy. I just can’t believe it yet that I have topped the exam.

Q. Did you expect to be one of the toppers of the exam?

A. No. I never expected to top the exam. I definitely thought that I would in the Top 10 list but securing AIR 1 is unbelievable.  I was guessing that I would bag AIR 5 or AIR 6, definitely not AIR 1.

Q. What is your overall score?

A. My score was 320/372. I have been so busy since morning that I have not been able to look at my subject wise scores properly. I did take a glance but do not remember it now.

Q. How long have you been preparing? And what was your study plan like for JEE Advanced 2016?

A. I have been preparing for JEE for the last two years, since Class 11th and took coaching classes from Allen Career Institute, Kota. As far as my study plan is concerned, I made sure that I utilize my time properly and manage it well. Also, I was regular with my studies.  

I was not strict with my study hours everyday. Some days I studied for 7-8 hours, while the other days, I studies for 9-8 hours. So, it was not fixed. There also were times when due to some or the other reasons I could not study even an hour.

Q. What was your score in JEE Main 2016? What was XII board marks?

A. In JEE Main 2016, I have secured 320/360. In Physics, I got 110/120, Chemistry 90/120 and Mathematics 120/120. In Class XII, I got 96.2 aggregate (5 subjects). I am a CBSE Board student.

Q. Have you taken any other exam?

A. Besides JEE Main and JEE Advanced, I appeared for BITSAT.

Q. Which IIT are you aiming at and which stream do you wish to pursue?

I want to get into IIT Bombay and pursue Computer Science and Engineering.

A. Q. Any tips for aspirants who would be taking the exam next year?

A. Any student taking the exam next year should keep in the following:

  • Identify the silly mistakes that you make from the study materials and question papers you have. Work on those.
  • Follow what your teachers say and suggest. Follow the notes they share. Read the books they recommend. Participate in group discussions.
  • Do not take pressure on yourself. Have a healthy competition against your peer group.
  • Take stress in a positive way. Do not overburden yourself.

Q. Tell us about your family background?

A.  My father is a government is a government servant and mother is a homemaker. I have a little sister studying in Class 8th. We all stay with our grandmother.

Q. Any future plans?

A. As of now, I have not thought about doing an MBA or going for research as others too. However, one thing that I want to do is stay in this country and contribute to the field of education. I want to help little kids though any which ways I can, may be through CS, IT, I don’t know. But, definitely want to add to the Indian education field.

IIT Bombay JAM cutoff 2026 for the OBC category ranged from 65 in the first round to 1217 in the last round. SC AI students have to score at least 217 if they want admission at IIT Bombay. The higher the score, the better chances of admission. Those who want admission to more popular courses will have to score higher, ie, for M.Tech CSE course, a score of at least 400 is needed.
