Securing an All India Rank (AIR) 6 in GATE 2018 was an unexpected and a pleasant surprise for Anshul Shrivastava. Unhappy with his performance and silly mistakes in the exam, Anshul never imagined to make it to the Top 10 list of GATE 2018 toppers for Agriculture Engineering stream.

GATE 2018 results were announced recently and Anshul scored 888 marks out of 1000 in the exam. His normalized score is 45.3 marks out of 100.

Cracking the exam in the first attempt without any coaching classes was a big deal for this topper. According to him, it was his seniors who helped him prepare for the exam. He shared, “ I prepared for GATE via self-study. My college seniors helped me and guided me very nicely. They helped me build concepts and also cleared my doubts”.

In an interview with Shiksha, Anshul Shrivastava, AIR 6, Agricultural Engineering, GATE 2018 talks about his prep strategies and more. Read the fill interview below.

Q. Tell us about your educational background?

A.

I pursued my BTech from College of Agricultural Engineering JNKVV Jabalpur. I started my GATE preparation from the 1st semester of my 3rd year.

Q. How long have you been preparing for the exam? Share your prep strategy?

A.

I have been preparing for the exam for the last one and half years. I started it from my third year of college. I studied 3 to 4 hours regularly. Regularity and consistency helped me .

Everyone has his own way of preparation and the methodology of approaching any exam. According to me, initially, one should concentrate on strengthening the concepts and then move on to the numerical section. I don't believe in scheduling  studies. I suggest students to focus on the content and topics to be covered daily rather than the schedule one has created for studies.

Q. According to you, which section should students attempt first in the exam?

A.

First attempt the easiest questions. Then try the ones which require some sort of calculations. Then, at last, try to solve tough questions which are about 10 percent of the questions.

Q. What was your strengths and weaknesses in the prep phase?

A.

My strength is consistency and my weakness is I get bored very easily if I don't get new things to explore or to study.

Q. Share some important topics for future GATE aspirants

A.

Aptitude, Reasoning and Mathematics is the key for scoring good marks. In my stream, soil and water conservative, food processing and farm power and machinery all carry equal weightage.

Q. What is the importance of mock tests and previous year question papers?

A.

Mock tests and test series are extremely important. They affect 30 to 40% of one’s performance in the exam. Yes, previous year papers indeed give you an idea and boosts your preparation.

Q. What was your study plan like? Can you suggest some important books for GATE?

A.

My study plan was flexible and I planned everyday differently. I tried to cover 2 to 3 topics daily. R Suresh , Michael, J Sahay, 3 Authors, 4 Authors are some good books one should refer. All the topics of GATE syllabus are important in my stream because according to the trend, the paper’s difficulty level is becoming more and more unpredictable.

Q. What is the difference between your UG exams and GATE 2018?

A.

UG exams are totally different from GATE. For UG, you just need to understand the overview and outline of the subjects. In GATE, you need to have a better numerical approach and need to undergo rigorous practice.

Q. What do you plan to do next?

A.

I want to move in to the research field and do MTech from good IIT.

Q. When did you decide to take GATE? And why GATE?

A.

I decided to take GATE in the 2nd year of BTech. I always wanted to contribute something to the research field. Through MTech and a good rank in GATE, I guess I can do that.

Q. Any tips for students taking the exam next year?

A.

Work hard because nothing is easy at national level. Believe in yourself and it’s very important to eat good food and take care of your health and have sound sleep.

Q. Tell us something about yourself, your hobbies and your family.

A.

I am a resident of Ganj Basoda, Vidisha. I like sketching whenever I have the time to do so. My father is a government servant and mother is a house wife.
