- First, calculate the total number of correct answers. - Now, allocate marks accordingly and then calculate the overall marks. - The candidate has to check or tally the total negative marks for wrong attempts. Note: Only MCQs will have negative markings. - There will be no negative marking for NAT questions. Therefore, scroll down for calculations:
Marks for MCQ: total marks (1 mark) + total marks (2 marks)
Total marks (1 mark) = 1 x number of correct attempts 1/3 x number of wrong attempts. Total marks (2 marks) = 2 x the number of correct attempts 2/3 x the number of wrong attempts. NAT Marks: Total marks (1 mark) + Total marks (2 marks). Formula for total marks: total marks secured for correct response - negative marks for wrong response.

Understand the Exam Pattern: Familiarize yourself with the exam pattern, including the number of questions, marking scheme, and duration of the exam. This will help you create a study plan and manage your time effectively.
Syllabus Analysis: Go through the official GATE syllabus for Civil Engineering and make a detailed analysis of the topics. Identify your strengths and weaknesses to prioritize your preparation accordingly.
Create a Study Plan: Develop a structured study plan that covers all the topics from the syllabus. Allocate specific time slots for each subject and set achievable targets. Ensure that you have sufficient time for revision and practice.
Study Material: Collect reliable study material such as textbooks, reference books, and lecture notes from reputed authors or coaching institutes. Make sure to refer to the latest editions and updated content.
Previous Year Question Papers: Solve previous year's question papers to understand the exam pattern, types of questions asked, and time management. This will also give you an idea of the important topics and help you identify areas that need more focus.
Mock Tests and Online Resources: Take advantage of online resources, such as mock tests and sample papers, to simulate the exam environment. Practice regularly to improve your speed, accuracy, and problem-solving skills. Several online platforms offer mock tests specifically designed for GATE preparation.
Focus on Core Subjects: Give special attention to the core subjects of Civil Engineering, such as Structural Analysis, Geotechnical Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Transportation Engineering, and Fluid Mechanics. These subjects usually carry more weightage in the exam.
Concept Clarity: Develop a strong conceptual understanding of the topics rather than just memorizing formulas and equations. Focus on the underlying principles and theories to solve complex problems.
Note-making and Revision: Maintain a separate notebook to jot down important formulas, concepts, and shortcuts. This will serve as a quick revision guide during the last few days before the exam.
Time Management: Practice time management while solving problems. During the exam, allocate the appropriate amount of time to each question based on its difficulty level. Avoid getting stuck on difficult questions and move on to easier ones to maximize your overall score.
Stay Updated: Stay updated with the latest developments in the field of Civil Engineering by reading relevant magazines, journals, and news articles. This will help you answer questions related to current trends and advancements.
