Public sector undertakings (PSUs) have over the years have created a career path for students who have qualified the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE). Every PSU has its own procedure to recruit GATE-qualified students. Most of the PSUs release application forms before the GATE exam as the applicants need to fill their GATE registration number when applying for a position. Candidates must be careful about the time of the release of forms so that they do not miss any of the forms.
Also, aspirants must ensure that they read the notifications by each PSUs as all of them may have different eligibility criteria.
After filling the form you have to wait till the GATE results are out. After the results are out, PSUs begin calling students for interviews via mail and inform them about the date and venue of the interview.
Explore colleges based on GATE
On the day of the interview, the selected candidates have to reach the venue on time with all your documents, including 10th and 12th marksheet and certificates, birth certificate and marksheet of all the degree semesters and the final degree. Those candidates who still have not received the degree need to carry the provisional certificate from the college. They also need to carry original as well as a photocopy of all the documents.
Once a candidate reaches the venue, they need to undergo document verification. Thereafter, sometimes students are be called in groups for Group Discussion and Group Task. Meanwhile, the personal interviews also start so all these things go on parallelly for different students. The entire process is day long and tiring but you have to maintain your freshness and calm till you wait for your turn in the interview.
At the GD, the candidates are seated in a group, given a topic on which they have to hold a discussion. Generally, the topics are based on current happenings around the globe like when I was appearing for an interview at Indian Oil Company Limited (IOCL) the topic that I got was “Role of politics in Sports”. Also, candidates will be given a list of points for group task which they have to arrange in order of priority after discussing within their group and coming to a common agreement. Then they have to appear for interview in front of a panel of interviewers out of which some will be HR people and other will be technical. The best part about the interview process at a PSU is that they ask for your favorite or best subject and then the interview is centered on that subject. Also, they will ask the candidate about their internship and B.tech Project and whatever work they have done so far. Also, the candidates must be aware about the ongoing projects of that particular PSU and have an answer ready as to why they want to get into that particular PSU. These things will be generally asked. Also, a candidate should be prepared with one or two core subjects of engineering stream very well.
But these things can be prepared easily after GATE exam so the first focus should be on GATE exam and after GATE exam an aspirant get a gap of two-three months in which they can prepare well for the interview.
All the best!

No, students can not get direct admission in Cluster Innovation Centre MSc. The college only accepts CUET PG score. Hence, having a GATE scorecard will not come in handy during admissions.

If you are seeking admission in NIT Surathkal MTech, then GATE is mandatory. Students applying for non-MTech programmes do not need to appear for GATE. For M.Tech however, GATE followed by the centralised counselling is mandatory.
