GATE 2018 Topper Divyanshu Jha AIR 3 Production And Industrial

A mechanical and automotive engineering graduate from the prestigious DTU (Delhi Technical University), Divyanshu Jha secured an AIR (All India Rank) 3 in GATE 2018’s Production And Industrial paper. Jha, who is not new to the exam,  appeared for GATE in the year 2016 as well 2017. He secured an AIR 490 and AIR 8 in 2016 and 2017 respectively. In previous attempts, his paper was Mechanical but this year he opted for PI as his paper.

His reason for taking the exam for the third time was to assess himself. He said, “I appeared in GATE 2018 solely for the purpose of self-assessment. Production as always been my weakest portion and I feared it always. But the best way to conquer the fear is to face the fear, so I appeared from PI”.

In an interview with Shiksha, Divyanshu shares his success mantra, prep tips for future students and his plan next. Read the full interview below.

Q. Congratulations. So, how do feel securing AIR 3 in GATE? Were you expecting to be one of the toppers?

A.

It always feel great to be among the toppers of GATE. Yes. I, indeed, was expecting myself to be in top 5.

Q. Is this your first attempt?

A.

This was my third attempt at GATE. My previous attempts were:

  • GATE 2016 - AIR 490 (Mechanical)
  • GATE 2017 - AIR 8 (Mechanical)

Q. What was the GATE Paper you appeared in? What was your GATE 2018 rank, score and marks?

A.

This time is decided to appear from Production And Industrial (PI). My rank is 3 with a marks of 79.33 out of 100 and score of 924 out of 1000.

Q. Did you take coaching classes? If yes, from where and how did it help?

A.

Yes. I had taken coaching from Made Easy for my 2016 attempt. After that I did self-study.  I think this is essential considering the present scenario where cutoffs are rising. I needed a source that could provide GATE topics and subject matter in a concise manner. This aids in grasping the topics easily thus saving time to devote to problem solving. Made Easy notes helped in this and  allowed me to focus on areas that had a high probability of being asked in the GATE exam.

Q. Is it necessary to take coaching classes or is self-study enough?

A.

Coaching helps to achieve the goal in shorter period. But if someone is starting early then self-study is also a good option.

Q. How long have you been preparing for the exam? Share your prep strategy?

A.

Since I already had a good rank in GATE 2017 in mechanical where the competition is toughest among all branches so my concepts were clear about the topics. All I did was revise my short notes one day before exam.

Coming to my prep strategy, I would like to mention my GATE 2017 strategy as I didn't prepare for 2018.

I started my preparation during my final year at college.  However, this became tough due to heavy college work load. To compensate, I tried to study at least 30 hours only for GATE on a weekly basis. After completing my graduation in 2016, I took up a job. However studying became too tough so I quit in October 2016 and concentrated on my preparation. After I quit my job, I took up studying up to 60 hours per week for next 3 months.

Q. According to you, which section should students attempt first in the exam?

A.

Here I must say that this depends upon the student. However my strategy is here:

  • I first attempted the non-technical section as the questions in these are very easy and help to build confidence.
  • Next I attempted the 2 marks technical section as they have the majority weightage and require a calm mind to crack them. The last section I attempted was the 1 marks technical one. These questions are very easy.

Q. What was your strengths and weaknesses in the prep phase?

A.

Numerical question were my strength and theory question were my weakness. I hardly could answer any subjective nature question during my preparation.

Q. Share some important topics for future GATE aspirants

A.

I personally feel that the difficulty levels of the GATE papers have dropped own in the past years. This means an easy paper and high GATE cutoffs. So it is imperative that we cover the entire GATE syllabus as much as possible. To get high marks, it is very much essential that one knows all the topics and not leave any stone unturned during preparation

Q. What is the importance of mock tests and previous year question papers?

A.

Solving mock tests, GATE Sample papers and previous year question papers is essential. I would advise students to solve all the previous year papers at least thrice. It helps to predict important topics and areas that need more focus. A Test series that is generally available easily from many of the coaching people is also a must as it helps students analyse their exam temperament and teaches time management.

Q. What was your study plan like? Can you suggest some important books for GATE?

A.

I used to study on weekly basis. I planned for weekly 30-35 hours of study in a week and kept a track of the same.

Q. What is the difference between your UG exams and GATE 2018?

A.

UG syllabus are divided in the semesters whereas in GATE, the entire syllabus we study during graduation is asked and GATE is more concept based.

Q. What do you plan to do next?

A.

I am already working with GAIL ( india) through my GATE 2017 rank. I haven't applied elsewhere.

Q. Any tips for students taking the exam next year?

A.

Just keep working hard. Success is never denied to those who work hard. Don't take pressure. Enjoy this phase of life as much as possible in a balanced way.

Q. Tell us something about yourself, your hobbies and your family.

A.

I am more of an introvert kind person. My hobbies are reading poetry and playing table tennis.

My father is a central government employee working with CPWD , my mother is home maker and my sister is pursuing her MBBS.
