Know GATE Syllabus and Exam Pattern

The syllabus and exam pattern are the two things that a GATE aspirant should always keep in mind and also prepare according to these two. GATE syllabus makes candidates familiar with the topics from which questions may be asked in the exam. The syllabus also helps students to prepare their study plan.

As far as the GATE exam pattern is concerned, it gives students an idea about how the examination will be conducted. It also allows candidates to know the number and type of questions along with the marking scheme. Candidates can also have an idea about managing their time during the exam so that they can attempt the maximum number of questions. Aspirants can check the GATE 2022 exam pattern below:

Topics with more Weightage

After knowing the syllabus, candidates must be aware of the topic-wise weightage as per the GATE question papers. Some of the topics in the syllabus often have more weightage in the question paper and this will help aspirants to score more. To know this, students have to go through all the previous year question papers and analyse them. After shortlisting the topics with more weightage, students can study these topics well to have the upper hand during the examination. However, other topics should not be ignored.

Prepare a Study Plan

Next, candidates must prepare a study schedule to prepare for the GATE 2022 and stick to it until the exam is completed. A personalised study schedule according to the candidate’s aptitude, topic-wise weightage and syllabus should be created. A proper study schedule will help the students to track their progress and know what is to be studied when and lessen the chances of getting diverted from the preparation.

Candidates can have daily and weekly targets in their study plan. The division of subjects and units should be done in a way that is not monotonous and more time is allotted to the difficult topics. Revision and mock tests should also be given a place in the schedule.

Choosing the Right Study Material

During preparation for GATE 2022, candidates can refer to their textbooks of undergraduate degree courses as the syllabus is somewhat similar. However, along with the textbooks, extra books for reference are also highly recommended. The extra books will help the candidates to widen their knowledge spectrum and introduction to all the possible types of questions. It will help during the examination to answer the questions quickly. Along with the best books for GATE 2022, candidates can also refer to online study material and previous GATE toppers’ interviews.

Know your Strengths

It is best for a candidate to know his/her strengths and weaknesses from the preparation and subject point of view. Candidates must focus on their weaknesses. Candidates must study already prepared topics well to get a good score. Candidates must also take the two compulsory sections of GATE 2022: Engineering Mathematics and Aptitude Test seriously as it will help in improving the GATE 2022 rank. For Engineering Mathematics, books by Kenneth Rosen, BS Garewal and Erwin Kreyszig can also be referred to.

Revision is Compulsory

One of the most important factors during preparation is revision. Candidates must give enough time to revise every topic and chapter so that everything stays fresh in the mind at the time of examination. Allot a few hours in your daily study for revision. It will help in understanding the topics better. Revision should be done frequently.

Manage Time during the Exam

GATE is three hours long and the candidates should know how to manage their time. If the time is not managed well, there will be chances of answering a lesser number of questions resulting in lesser marks. The best way to learn time management is to solve the GATE 2022 mock tests within three hours. This will allow you to practice completing the exam within the time duration of the exam.

Keep your Mind and Body Healthy

Along with studies, candidates must also keep themselves healthy both mentally and physically. It is difficult for a sick candidate to perform well in GATE 2022 despite how hard he/she has studied. Therefore, make sure to eat healthy food, get enough sleep and also take breaks in between the study sessions. Try to be away from screens (other than studies) always indulge in the outdoor sports activity to refresh yourself during the breaks.
