If You Passed the AIBE 2025
Congratulations! Now that you have passed the AIBE Exam, the next most important step is to obtain your certificate of practice. After passing the All India Bar Examination (AIBE), you are eligible to apply for a Certificate of Practice (CoP) from the BCI, which allows you to practice law in India.
But the question is how to get the AIBE COP? Candidates can apply for the COP through their respective State Bar Council. The process does vary slightly from state to state, but the list of documents to be submitted is more or less the same:
- A copy of your AIBE scorecard or result.
- Proof of your law degree (LLB).
- Identity proof (Aadhaar card, passport, etc.).
- Any other documents the State Bar Council may request.
Why is a Certificate of Practice Important?
The Certificate of Practice (COP) hold most important documet for anyone who wants to pursue career in law. The COP is essential for practising law in India. Without it, you cannot represent clients in any court. It validates your qualifications and allows you to work as an advocate in various courts, including district and high courts.
Holding a COP enables you to connect with other practising advocates, creating opportunities for mentorship and collaboration. It is especially helpful for those starting their careers by working as assistants to experienced lawyers and gaining valuable practical experience. A COP grants access to benefits available to registered advocates in India, such as special legal resources, continuing education opportunities, and various professional privileges. It also ensures eligibility for legal insurance, professional indemnity, and welfare schemes offered by the Bar Council.
Even if you choose not to actively practise law, the COP ensures recognition as a legal professional. This can be advantageous for transitioning into legal consultancy, academia, or other roles within the legal field. With a COP, you can qualify for leadership and administrative positions within State Bar Councils and other elected bodies under the Advocates Act. This opens doors to influence policy, contribute to the development of the legal profession, and participate in the governance of legal institutions. For more details on what to do after AIBE 2024 results, be sure to follow the official guidelines and procedures.
Once you have the COP, you can start practicing law either independently or by joining a law firm, corporate legal department, or other legal organisations.
