The Bar Council of India releases the Certificate of Practice to those candidates who clear the All India Bar Examination (AIBE). The AIBE 22 will be held on November 29 and the result will be released in January 2027. The BCI releases the CoP either through the State Bar Councils or through Speed Post in the physical form. The BCI also started to provide the digital copy of the CoP on its mobile application. Let us see the process of getting the CoP after the AIBE result.
AIBE Certificate of Practice to be Released Soon: The Bar Council of India will release the AIBE Certificate of Practice9CoP) for the AIBE-qualified candidates only. The AIBE 21 resullt was released on July 18 and the BCI will soon release the CoP for the qualified candidates.
The Certificate of Practice is the authority letter for the candidates, which authorises them to practice in the Court of Law. Without the CoP, a candidate can practice for a temporary period of two years in any court, that too with the permission of the State Bar Council (provisional enrollment).
From AIBE 22, the candidates appearing in their final year of LLB course can apply for the exam. It removed the compulsion of Enrollment in the State Bar Council as an eligibility to apply for AIBE. This certificate is issued only to those candidates who successfully clear the All India Bar Examination (AIBE). No lawyer can practice in Indian courts without CoP.
The candidates must complete the Bar Council of India registration process to become eligible for lawyering in Indian Courts.
In this article, we have explained the procedure to obtain a Certificate of Practice from the State Bar Council, including important details on the form, required documents, and fee structure.

What is COP?
The CoP is essentially a license that authorises advocates to practice law in India. Introduced in 2009-2010, it became mandatory for candidates to secure this certificate from their respective State Bar Councils after successfully clearing the AIBE. Law graduates will have to pass the AIBE within two years of their provisional enrollment. If they fail to do so, they are required to renew their enrollment with the State Bar Council and reappear for the next session of the examination. The BCI has not imposed any restriction on the number of attempts for AIBE. This means aspirants can take the exam multiple times until they secure the minimum qualifying marks, which are as follows:
| Category | Minimum qualifying marks for AIBE |
|---|---|
| General/ OBC category | 40% of total marks |
| SC/ ST/ PWD | 35% of total marks |
All candidates obtaining above the minimum marks will be considered as qualified/ Pass, and those who are not able to secure the minimum marks will have to take the next session of AIBE. Those who qualify for AIBE will be able to obtain the COP as mentioned below.

No, one cannot get a CoP without having passed the AIBE if one completed his or her education with an LLB degree in or after 2009-2010. Passing the AIBE is mandatory for those who want to practice law on their own after completing an LLB degree from any recognised institution.
