Shiksha spoke to a few CMAT toppers of previous years’ and found out their strategy of preparing for the exam. Here is what they had to say:

Mikin Shah, Serial topper, Co-founder and Director at foresight school

“Now that there is less than a week to go for the CMAT exam, there is no time for the candidates to prepare from the scratch now. Well, I believe that candidates must have already prepared whatever they had to by now. Now is the time to attempt at least 3 mocks in this week”, he said.

Adding on to this he said, “Along with attempting 3 mocks tests in the last week of the exam, candidates must also thoroughly analyze the mocks tests. This means that they should put in at least 7-8 hours per day – 3 hours for attempting the mock tests, and the remaining time for analyzing the tests.” Though he laid focus on attempting the mock tests, he also mentioned that candidates must make sure that they read the newspaper for about 30-45 mins on a daily basis. “Since CMAT comprises of Verbal Ability and Reading Comprehension, and GK section, reading the newspaper will be of double benefit. Candidate can improve his/her English and at the same time stay updated about the latest happenings.”

While sharing another important tip he said, “Candidates can invest their time in revising the formulae. Also, aspirants must be very clear about which section they are attempting and what they are attempting. I personally believe that the sequence of attempts should be General Knowledge, Verbal Ability, Logical Reasoning and Maths.” “Needless to mention”, he said, “Candidates should be well-versed with the location of the exam centre a day before the exam and must focus on staying calm and composed. All the best to all the candidates!”

Supreet Gupta, CMAT February 2015 topper

“Every candidate must dream big, and not fear of failure – this was my success mantra, and I want other candidates to follow the same. While preparing for any exam focus on competing with yourself, and you are sure to reach great heights.”

Adding on to this he said, “During the exam, candidates must allot a specific time frame for every section in the paper. Quant section must be completed in 50 minutes, Reasoning in 45 minutes, Verbal Section again in 45 minutes, and General Knowledge in 10 minutes. Rest of the time can be dedicated to solve the tough questions”.

He also said that candidates must ensure that they focus on accuracy during the exam, and silly mistakes should be avoided. Also, giving importance to General Knowledge section he said, “This section can help you tremendously in scoring a good rank in CMAT, thus make sure you are updated with all the current affairs.”

Gaurav Dave, CMAT September 2014 topper

“My first tip would be to focus immensely on General Knowledge section preparation. Moreover, candidates must keep in mind that it is very important to be good at static GK. Though it is vital to stay updated about the current affairs, but focus more on static GK.”

“Also, by now candidates should have attempted around 8-12 mock tests. And since now this is the last week, 3-4 more mock tests should be attempted”, he added. “I wish all the aspirants best of luck for the exam”, he said.
