CUET PG 2024 Normalization Process

CUET PG 2024 Normalization Process: The National Testing Agency will conduct the Common University Entrance Test PG 2024 in Computer-Based Test (CBT) Mode. The CUET PG 2024 examination were conducted between March 11 to 28, 2024. This exam was conducted over a window period of 17 days at CUET PG 2024 Exam centre cities.

Because the single-subject exam was conducted on multiple days and in multiple shifts, making the scorecard of the same subject for different shifts of the exam becomes a cumbersome process. To eliminate the disparity among the CUET PG Test takers, NTA has adopted the CUET PG 2024 Normalization process.

CUET Normalisation Process is a technique to calculate the marks of students with another of the same subject exams held in multiple shifts. The process is used to compare and analyse students appearing in multiple shifts. This Shiksha Article will help the CUET PG 2024 candidates to understand the complete process of Normalisation. Along with this they also need to learn how to score of their respective subject result is being calculated. This year 7,68,414 candidates appeared in the exam and out of them 4,62,603 were unique.

CUET PG 2024 results was released by the examination conducting body, NTA on April 13, 2024. The CUET PG 2024 Results compiled based on the corrections made in the provisional answer key (also called CUET PG Final answer key). Candidates will have to log in to the official website with their registration credentials and download the CUET PG 2024 result or scorecard.

CUET (PG) provides a single window opportunity to students seeking admission in any of the Central Universities (CUs) or other participating organizations (including State Universities, Deemed and Private Universities) across the Country especially those from rural and other remote areas, and help establish better connections with the Universities. A single Examination enables the Candidates to cover a wide outreach and be part of the admissions process to various Central Universities and other participating Universities.

NTA stated a technique called as ''equipercentile method''. According to NTA,'' In this method, percentile for each candidate is calculated using the raw marks of the candidate as compared to the raw marks of others in the same session. This is done for every session across multiple days for the same subject. These percentiles are then equated and converted into normalised marks. For sessions with a smaller number of candidates, these are clubbed with bigger sessions.'' In the normalisation process, the raw marks of students appearing for the same subject on different days and multiple shifts, are converted into normalised marks.

According to UGC Chairman, Mamidala Jagadesh Kumar, ''These normalised marks of the candidates, obtained using equipercentile method, in different sessions in a given subject can be used in the same way we use the raw marks of a conventional single session exam. Therefore, in a particular university, if the raw marks of the skill component have a certain weightage it can be added to the remaining weightage of the normalized marks to prepare the rank list.''

CUET PG Normalisation Process 2024

The candidates who attempt the comparatively tougher examination are likely to get lower marks as compared to those who attempt the easier one. To overcome such a situation, “Normalization procedure based on Percentile Score” will be used to ensure that candidates are neither benefitted nor disadvantaged due to the difficulty level of the examination.

The process of Normalization is an established practice for comparing candidate scores across multisession papers. For normalization across sections, NTA shall use the percentile equivalence.

CUET PG 2024 Percentile Scores

Percentile scores are scores based on the relative performance of all those who appear for the examination. The marks obtained are transformed into a scale ranging from 100 to 0 for each session of examinees. The Percentile Score indicates the percentage of candidates that have scored EQUAL TO OR BELOW that particular Percentile in that examination. Therefore the topper (highest score) of each session will get the same Percentile of 100 which is desirable.

The Percentile score of a Candidate is calculated as follows:
Here is the formula given for how to calculate the percentile score of a candidate:

The Percentile score will be the Normalized Score for the examination (instead of the raw marks of the candidate) and shall be used for the preparation of the merit lists.

Step By Step Procedure for Normalization And Preparation of Result:

Step-1: Distribution of Examinees in two shifts:
Candidates have to be distributed into two sessions randomly so that each session has an approximately equal number of candidates. These two sessions would be as follows:
Session-1: Day-1 Shift-1, Session-2: Day-1 Shift-2
In the event of a more number of days or less number of shifts, the candidates will be divided accordingly. This will ensure that there is no bias in the distribution of candidates who shall take the examination. Further, with a large population of examinees spread over the entire country, the possibility of such bias becomes remote.

Step 2: Preparation of Results for each Session:
The examination results for each session will be prepared in the form of

  • Raw Scores
  • Percentiles Scores of Total raw scores.
The Percentiles would be calculated for each candidate in the Session as follows:
Let TP1 be the Percentile Score of the Total Raw Score of that candidate.

Step-3: Compilation of NTA score and Preparation of Result:
The Percentile scores for the Total Raw Score for all the sessions (Session-1: Day-1 Shift-1, Session-2: Day1 Shift-2) as calculated in Step-2 above would be merged and shall be called the NTA scores which will then be used for the compilation of results and further processing for deciding the allocation.
