What is CUET PG Marks Vs Rank Vs Percentile?
Candidates should be aware of the CUET PG Marks Vs Rank Vs Percentile. While all three values are directly related to the candidate’s chances of admission into their preferred course and university, there are subtle differences that should be known.
CUET PG 2025 Marks
Raw marks in CUET PG refer to the actual number of marks scored by the candidate based on correct and incorrect responses. The marking scheme is as follows:
-
+4 marks for every correct answer.
-
-1 mark for every incorrect answer.
-
0 marks for unattempted questions.
For example, if a student answers 80 questions correctly, 10 incorrectly, and leaves 10 unattempted, their raw marks will be:
(80 x 4) - (10 x 1) = 320 - 10 = 310 marks
Total Marks
Each subject/test paper has a different number of questions. Most CUET PG papers are for 400 marks, comprising 100 questions.
CUET PG 2025 Ranks
Rank is a positional indicator that shows a candidate's standing among all candidates who appeared for the CUET PG 2025. A lower rank indicates better performance.
-
All India Rank (AIR): Determined on the basis of raw marks and normalization (if applicable).
-
Used by universities for seat allotment.
Tie-Breaking Rules
In case two candidates score the same marks:
-
Higher number of correct answers.
-
Fewer negative responses.
-
Higher graduation marks (in some universities).
-
Age (older candidate gets preference).
CUET PG 2025 Percentile
The percentile score indicates the percentage of candidates who scored equal to or below a particular candidate in the exam. It is not the same as percentage.
Formula:
Example:
If a student’s rank is 500 among 10,000 candidates:
So, the student scored better than 95.05% of test-takers.
Importance of Percentile
-
Percentile allows universities to assess relative performance.
-
It mitigates issues due to normalization across different sessions.
-
Most universities set cutoffs in terms of percentile.

| 0 – 29 | 0 – 5.0 | 85,001+ |
Factors Affecting Rank and Percentile
1. Number of Candidates
-
More candidates = tougher competition = higher marks needed for same rank.
2. Difficulty Level of the Paper
-
If a paper is difficult, average scores go down → lower marks may still fetch high percentile.
3. Normalization
CUET PG is held in multiple sessions. Hence, NTA uses normalization to ensure fairness across varying difficulty levels.
4. Subject Popularity
-
Subjects like English, Political Science, and Commerce have more applicants.
-
Technical and niche subjects see fewer applicants, so cutoff patterns differ.
