SMVDU was established in 1999. The university was established under the Act of the J&K Legislature. This is a residential university.It is approved by UGC under Section 2(F) & Section 12(B) of UGC Act of 1956.

SMVDU has over 20 collaborations and houses one college of Nursing (SMVD College of Nursing), four faculties, consisting of 15 Schools.
