For me, learning is an integral part of living and of working. Recently, I was asked to provide my academic credentials for a profile to a potential customer. I truthfully wrote "none", followed by "many years of informal and autodidactic study in the areas of communication, cooperation, living systems, psychology, participation, sustainability, innovative business models, personal development, collective intelligence and much more". Written 15 Aug, 2014. Downvote Comment Share Vivian DittmarVivian Dittmar Actually, that college experience never ended, meaning, I am still in it. Do I plan to graduate? I am not sure. Did I get the job? I sure did. In my college experience at the University of Life, I also have a lot of time, yet I am never short of things to do. I am always reading about three books at a time, getting into new areas of interest, discovering new and exciting things to learn about. Could I have learned what I did in a formal education setting? I certainly could not have. I would not have had the time! Let alone the interest… Over the years, I have watched my college educated friends in amazement: studying things that did not interest them, supposedly preparing them for jobs they were not sure they wanted, only to find themselves learning whatever they needed to know for the job on the job after completing their formal education. And worst of all: many wondering what they want to do with their life years into the job, since that question never had space earlier. It really didn't seem like a smart way to go about it. So, back to the question: the curriculum was determined by two factors. 1. my current interest and 2. the current demands of my life situation and whatever challenges it confronted me with (and trust me, there were plenty of challenges). The professors are whoever I come across personally or in the form of a book or in recent times in the form of an online posting who seems to know more about what I want to know than I do. Learning happens all the time, basically as a side effect of digging into whatever interest me. Working with other students tends to take the form of doing research or collaborating on projects regarding particular areas of interest. You may wonder where this unusual education has brought me in terms of conventional measures of success and happiness. I can tell you I have never held a job - not because I did not have the opportunity, yet because I have always supported myself doing what I wanted to do freelance. What I want to do keeps evolving, just as my areas of interest do. I am living a very fulfilling and rich life - personally, professionally and financially - and I attribute that 100% to my unusual education.
