A resident of Chhindwara, Madhya Pradesh, Vijay Mahore secured an AIR 10 in the Agricultural Engineering branch of GATE 2018, the results for which were declared on March 16. Mahore, who cracked the exam without coaching classes, did not take any mock tests. All he did was solve last 8 years GATE papers in just 15 days before the final exam.

Mahore always wanted to pursue his higher studies from IITs and that’s one reason he took GATE. He said, “IITs provide not only a good learning environment but also an environment of creative thinking.  That's why I started the preparation of GATE 2018 exam”.  Read the full interview below.

Q. Congratulations. So, how do feel securing AIR 10 in GATE (AE)? Were you expecting to be one of the toppers?

A.
It was an absolutely surprising and exciting moment for me when I saw my rank. I never expected that I will secure an All India Rank 10. But I did it. Success is something which always gives you a boost to do something new. I am very happy.  I would like to thank my parents, my brother, friends and seniors who have supported and encouraged me throughout my preparation.

Q. Tell us about your educational background?

A.

I am from district Chhindwara Madhya Pradesh and a student of BTech in Agricultural Engineering at College of Agricultural engineering, Jabalpur (JNKVV).

Q. How long have you been preparing for the exam? Share your prep strategy.

A.

See when you are studying in a college, it is very important to maintain a balance between your academics and your preparation for competitive exam because both are important.

I am a final year student of BTech Agriculture Engineering, so it was very important for me to have an effective time table for healthy preparation of this particular exam. I used to study of 4 hours daily only for GATE 2018 exam.

Being a student of BTech Agriculture Engineering, it was bit difficult for me to find comprehensive study material for the exam. The availability of the comprehensive study material for this particular exam in agriculture engineering is not as good as in other branches of engineering. To overcome this problem I made my own notes from different standard books of all subjects for this particular exam. That was something which has helped me a lot in quick and comprehensive revision of all subjects. Till the end of my preparation I didn't find any difficulty in any subject.

Q. According to you, which section should students attempt first in the exam?

A.

I had made different strategies for time management before the final exam and applied those strategies while solving last year papers. After that I picked one strategy which was appropriate for me.

Firstly, I attempted 25 questions which were of 1 mark each in 30 minutes then I solved the Aptitude section in 15 minutes. I devoted the remaining time for solving 30 technical section of 2 marks each. I invested some time for rechecking and ensuring I save mys answer in the computer.

Q. What is the importance of mock tests?

A.

I didn't take any mock test. I solved last 8 years GATE papers in just 15 days before the final GATE exam. I used to solve previous year papers in the same time slot of 2pm to 5pm during which I had to sit for solving the final GATE question paper in an exam hall.

Q. Can you suggest some important books for GATE?

A.

Some important books for GATE agriculture engineering:

  • Advanced Engineering Mathematics, By H.K.  Dass.
  • Soil Mechanics, By: B.C.  Punmia.
  • Soil and water Conservation engineering, By: R. Suresh.
  • Principle of farm machinery, By: R.A. Kepner, Roy Bainer & E.L. Berger.
  • (5) Tractors & their power units, By: J.B.  Liljedahl,   P.K.  Turnquist,   D.W.  Smith,   Makota  Hoki.
  • Principles of Hydrology, By: K. Subramaniyam.
  • Irrigation Theory and Practice, By: A.M. Michael.
  • Unit operations of agricultural processing By: K.M. Sahay & K.K. Singh.
  • Heat and Mass Transfer by Rajput.

Q. What is the difference between your UG exams and GATE 2018?

A.

I always wanted to do higher studies from IITs because they provide not only a good learning environment but also an environment of creative thinking.  That's why I started the preparation of GATE 2018 exam.

Q. What’s your plan next?

A.

I want to do my Masters in Geo-informatics and Natural Resources from IIT Bombay.

Q. Any tips for students taking the exam next year?

A.
  • Believe in yourself.
  • Analyse the syllabus thoroughly and make your own notes.
  • Set short duration goals. For e.g set a goal to cover any topic within a day or within a week and work regularly and strictly on it. And at the end of your preparation you will see that you have completed your preparation without any problems.
