Yatish Agarwal from Kota, emerged as one of the toppers of JEE Advanced 2017, results for which were announced on June 11, 2017. Bagging an All India Rank 12 in the exam, this topper says that he never thought of falling in the top 15 Toppers for JEE Advanced 2017 and it is a moment of surprise for him and his family. Yatish aims to seek admission in IIT Bombay, which is also his dream institute. His interest and love for coding has motivated him to pursue BTech in Computer Science.
A student of Allen Institute Kota, this 17 year old also bagged an AIR 115 in JEE Main 2017. His total score was 316 marks. In an interview with Shiksha, Yatish shared the reason of his climb from JEE Main 2017 rank 115 to JEE Advanced 2017 rank of 15. He also talked about his preparations strategies and shared a few tips for future aspirants of JEE. Read the full interview below.
Q. Congrats on your achievement. So how do you feel being the topper of JEE Advanced 2017? Did you expect to be one of the toppers of the exam?
It is actually surprising for me as I never thought of falling into the top 15 Toppers for JEE Advanced 2017. My parents felt proud to know that their son has bagged an AIR 15 in one of the most popular engineering exams in India.
Q. Which board have you studies from? Which school have you studies in? What was your XII Board marks?
I have completed my 10th from a local school in Surat after which I got admitted into Aklank Public School, Kota from where I completed my 12th. It is affiliated to CBSE Board and I scored 93.4% marks in PCM.
Q. What is your subject wise and overall score?
Mathematics: 119
Chemistry: 102
Physics: 104

Q. How long have you been preparing? What was your study plan for JEE Advanced 2017? What is the minimum time frame needed to prepare for JEE Main?
I started with the preparations to crack JEE from class XI onwards. It took almost 2 years for me to say that now I am ready to appear for the exam. Never had any plan of action to study. The only thing I religiously followed was my teacher in Allen, Kota.
According to me, 2 years are required and are more than enough to prepare for JEE.
Q. How was the preparation for JEE Advanced different from JEE Main?
I felt that the difficulty level is higher in JEE Advanced as compared to JEE Main. JEE Advanced has more of NCERT based questions whereas in JEE Main, everything is included that is a part of CBSE’s curriculum.
How was the preparation for JEE Advanced different from JEE Main?
Q. Did you take the JEE Main 2017 examination in online or offline mode. What was your rank and score?
I appeared for JEE Main 2017 in offline mode. My JEE Main 2017 score is 316 and the Rank was 115.
Q. What did you do to improve your weak areas?
I did discover a few weak areas while preparing organic chemistry. But with the help of my teacher and the coaching institute, I could clear the backlog of doubts within a period of 45 days.
Q. Have you taken any other exams besides JEE Main and JEE Advanced?
No, I did not appear for any other exams. I did register for BITSAT but the exam dates clashed with the dates of the Chemistry Olympiad. So, I decided to attend the camp instead of the BITSAT 2017 exam.
Q. Did you take coaching? Do you think coaching is required to crack JEE?
I got enrolled into Allen Institute, Kota. The teachers were very helpful and one of the reasons that I have been able to take a jump from an AIR 115 in JEE Main to AIR 15 in JEE Advanced. I feel that coaching is necessary for correct guidance.
Q. Did you take up mock tests and sample papers? Do you think practicing from previous years question papers help and how?
Yes, I took numerous mock tests and solved as many sample papers as possible. Practicing previous year papers gives the candidate an idea about the exam pattern.
Q. Any important books that you would suggest for future aspirants.
I only read those books which my teacher recommended. Other than that, I don’t remember any such course material. My teacher recommended Errudu for Mathematics and S.L. Looney & Hall n Knight for Physics.
Q. Which IIT are you aiming at and which stream do you wish to pursue?
I wish to pursue BTech in Computer Science from IIT-Bombay.
Q. Any tips for aspirants who would be taking the exam next year?
Hard work is the key to success. Try not to create any backlogs and clear all the doubts at the time they occur. Keep your concepts clear and finally, hope for the best to happen.
Q. Why do you want to study engineering? When did you decide to study engineering?
I want to study Engineering because I feel I am not good in anything but Engineering. I simple like engineering. I decided to study engineering after my 10th boards.
Q. Tell us about your family.
We are a family of three. My father is a businessman and my mother is a homemaker. My elder sister is pursuing Engineering in Physics from IIT Delhi.
Q. Any future plans?
Up till now, the only plan was to crack JEE and get into IIT Bombay. Now, I wish to complete my degree in C.S. and establish a startup company.
Q. Tell us about yourself and your hobbies.
I am a very funny kind of person. A little bit of smart, as to what my friends say. I have always believed in the fact that “Patience is the key to success”. Sachin Tendulkar is my inspiration to achieve big whilst having patience and perseverance. I love to swim, play table tennis and also enjoy a bit of dance moves. I even hang out with friends when bored with studies.
