Meet Aman Kansal from Jaipur, who bagged an All India Rank 15 and secured a total score of 323 in the JEE Advanced 2017, the results for which were announced on June 11, 2017. Aman was also ranked 21st in JEE Main 2017. He was determined to achieve the set goals, much to the joy of his family members who have supported the topper as pillars, throughout his preparation period.

This 17 year old JEE topper dreams to pursue BTech in Computer Science from IIT Bombay and set up his own software developing company. Along with a group of 16 friends, Aman wishes to change the whole criteria of candidates completing engineering from India and settling abroad. His motive is to contribute for the betterment of our own country and generate multiple job opportunities for engineering graduate so they do not have to settle abroad. Instead, candidates from foreign countries will be coming to ours in search of better opportunities and career growth.

In a candid interview with Shiksha, the topper shared his prep mantras and future plans. Read the full interview below.

Q. Congrats on your achievement. So how do you feel being the topper of JEE Advanced 2017? Did you expect to be one of the toppers of the exam?

A.

From the very beginning, my aim was to crack JEE and seek admission into IIT Bombay. Falling into the top 15 toppers was surely a surprise. My parents were very supportive since the day I decided to study engineering. They are of course happy and proud of my performance.

Q. Which board have you studies from? Which school have you studies in? What was your XII Board marks?

A.

I have completed my schooling from Cambridge Court High School, Jaipur in CBSE Board. I scored an aggregate of 93.8% and in PCM it was 98%.

Q. What is your subject wise and overall score in JEE Advanced 2017?

A.

Mathematics: 122

Chemistry: 105

Physics: 96

JEE Advanced 2017 Score: 323

Q. How long have you been preparing? What was your study plan for JEE Advanced 2017? What is the minimum time frame needed to prepare for JEE Main?

A.

I commenced with the preparations for JEE in class X and continued till the day of the exam. I took a number of mock tests and solved as many sample papers as possible. I also joined an institute to get the right kind of guidance which is needed to crack the JEE exams. Apart from taking regular classes at the coaching Institute, I used to devote 6-7 hours to self-preparations every day.

According to me, a minimum of 2 years are required to say that a candidate is thoroughly prepared to appear for the exam and expect a rank in JEE. Two years’ time is needed in order to thorough the concepts and mugging them up only worked in school, not in JEE.

Q. How was the preparation for JEE Advanced different from JEE Main?

A.

Yes, the pattern of questions are different for both the exams and a bit typical in JEE Advanced. All the questions in JEE Advanced are based on NCERT only. When planning to crack JEE Advanced, one needs to pay attention on clearing the concepts of Organic and Inorganic chemistry and be thoroughly prepared with the concepts of Physics and Chemistry.

Q. Did you take the JEE Main 2017 examination in online or offline mode. What was your rank and score?

A.

I appeared for JEE Main 2017 in offline mode.

JEE Main 2017 score: 335

JEE Main 2017 rank: AIR 21

Q. What did you do to improve your weak areas?

A.

As I told earlier, I took a lot mock tests and solved sample papers. This was to eliminate any kind of weak areas that existed. Out coaching institute also conducted regular tests and the results were displayed on the same day. This was to rate our preparation and then work accordingly on the points where we lack.

Although, I did not discover any such weak areas during my preparation years. I used to make a note of questions that appeared repeatedly while solving mocks and sample papers. As according to me, repeated questions can also be given in the examination. After making note of these questions, the second step was to fetch other similar types and then solve them.

Q. Have you taken any other exams besides JEE Main and JEE Advanced?

A.

Yes, I appeared for BITSAT 2017. My BITSAT 2017 Score was 454.

Q. Did you take coaching? From where? Do you think coaching is required to crack JEE?

A.

Yes, I started preparing for JEE in class 10th and joined Allen Career Institute, Jaipur as I believe coaching is required for correct guidance. A coaching is where you get the real time experience of how a competitive examination is? Self-preparation is not enough if you do not have the idea of exam pattern.

The teachers at the coaching institute make their students prepare in the right manner and set a direction that one needs to follow in order to achieve their goal. It may not be mandatory but, it is necessary. The mock tests prepared by the teachers give you an idea of how the actual exam is going to be. According to me, taking the tests of the same pattern every day, makes you thoroughly prepared to face the examination.

Q. Did you take up mock tests and sample papers? Do you think practicing from previous years question papers help and how?

A.

As I have told earlier, mock tests are an important part of your preparation and I have been taking a number of mock tests at home and also at the coaching institute.

Solving previous year papers give us an idea of the exam pattern and types of questions. This proves beneficial for the candidates writing the exam for the first time.

Q. Any important books that you would suggest for future aspirants.

A.

I can tell about the book that I used for preparations. For Physics I referred Errudu and for Mathematics I used TMH’s set of books and Thomas Calculus.

Q. Which IIT are you aiming at and which stream do you wish to pursue?

A.

I aim to seek admission into Indian Institute of Technology-Bombay and pursue BTech in Computer Science. It is also my dream institute and course.

Q. Any tips for aspirants who would be taking the exam next year?

A.

The only thing I would like to say is to refer better books by good writers and pay attention to all the concepts. Never keep backlogs of doubts and solve as many mocks and samples as possible.

Q. Why do you want to study engineering?

A.

I have been witnessing that Engineers are graduating from India and then instead of contributing to their own country, they plan to gain benefit from other countries in terms of salary, growth and opportunities. Unlike others, I wish to become an Engineer and work for the betterment of my own country. We are a group of 16 friends and all us wish to achieve the same goal and contribute for the development of our home country instead of settling inboard.

I developed my interest in science when I was in class X and this is when I decided to study engineering. About the course selection, BTech is computer science will help me establish a software company.

Q. Tell us about your family.

A.

We are a joint family of 5 members. My mother is a Principal of St. Joseph College for Girls and my father is Chief Financial Offer in Gravita India Ltd.

Q. Any future plans?

A.

After completing Btech in Computer Science from IIT-B, I wish to pursue post-graduation from some foreign university. Further coming back to my country and set up a software developing company.
