Q:   How do I become a registered social worker?
A:

To become a registered Social Worker you have to get a relevant degree, such as a BSW or related field. Gain supervised experience through internships or entry-level positions. Consider pursuing an MSW for advanced training (optional). Research and meet specific licensure requirements in your region. Pass the required licensing exams, often administered by the ASWB. Submit an application for social work licensure to the appropriate regulatory body.

BA Social Work FAQs: 2025

Here are some Frequently Asked Questions related to BA in Social Work:

Q:   What is Gerontological Social Work?
A:

Gerontological Social Work is a sub field of Social Work in which you will learn about the requirements of elderly people and their families. Studying this subject will help you understand the elderly and know where they need help and how to help them. You can help them overcome the challenges that people face as they age. In this, you will also lean how to provide therapy or counseling sessions and motivate them to take care of their health and maintain their quality of life.

Q:   What is the difference between sociology or social work?
A:
The major difference between social work and sociology is that social work is the practice of advocating for individuals and communities, while sociology is the study of societies and human interaction. Social workers tend to work for institutions that focus on needs in society by creating systems and services to meet those needs. Sociologists, however, seek to explain both positive and negative human behaviors through research and study.
Q:   Why pursue BA Social Work?
A:

There are many reasons why candidates prefer to pursue BA in Social Work course. Some of these are as follows:

  • Students who pursue BA in Social Work course have career opportunities that are not available in other domains. The salaries are justified and there is less competition in the field.
  • The majority of Indian universities have tuition costs under INR 1 lakh, making studying BA in Social Work there reasonably feasible for most people. Also, aspirants who want to undertake BSW courses need to possess empathy and good communication skills. They should also be well aware of the social problems of the area wherein they work and also possess good communication skills.
  • The syllabus of BA in Social Work courses is created in such a way as to instil in the students the required social sensitivity and confidence to foster them as agents of societal change and benefit.
Q:   Which has a better scope and why: Social Work or Sociology?
A:
Sociology covers human behavior, cultures, trends and phenomenon. The scope ends at individual human behavior, psyche and personalities. That's where psychology takes over. I once had a sociology professor tell me I couldn't put in my research that a participant was upset at my research question, because I wasn't qualified to know if they were angry. As a double major in psychology it was clear the participant was angry. In psychology I could make this distinction, but sociology avoids explaining how the human brain works in social explanations. Sociologist (also psychologist) George Herbert Mede made an analogy once about studying the trees or the forest to compare sociology and individual human behavior. Although sociology does explain human behavior and the environments influence, psychology tends to focus more on how the brain is affected by these interactions. In the end, my personal opinion is that sociology has a very large scope and psychology tends to narrow it down a bit.
