Wireless is a technology that uses signals to fetch information such as data, audio, video, files, etc. without using wires. The signals are electromagnetic waves that travel through the air. The electromagnetic waves are developed when electric energy travels through a piece of metal like a wire or antenna. The competence of waves to travel at some distance depends on the strength of that energy. Today, we use various applications of wireless technology such as Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, GPS, wireless mouse, wireless keyboard, wireless headphones, cordless telephones, satellite television, etc.

Wireless: Basic Concepts

In this section, different concepts of wireless that keep our daily lives hassle-free have been added. Have a look at them below:

  • Wireless devices – Such devices that have some sort of wireless network connectivity to exchange data, files, etc. are called wireless devices. Some examples are cell phone, cordless, TV remote control, radio, GPS, etc.
  • Wireless signals – The signals (electromagnetic waves) that are formed when electric energy passes through a piece of metal are called wireless signals. Wireless devices use these signals for their operation.
  • Wi-Fi Modes – There are three modes of Wi-Fi i.e. Ad-hoc mode, infrastructure mode and direct mode. These modes enable access to internet for file sharing and other operations. Wi-Fi ad-hoc mode is very easy to install, least hardware required for it, and it is known as peer-to-peer Wi-Fi mode. On the other hand, it is little hard to configure infrastructure mode than Ad-hoc mode.
  • Antennas - Antennas are important for wireless local area networks (WLAN). They play a role in signal strength and range and facilitate the wireless signal we use to browse the web, stream movies, work from home, and play video games.

Wireless: Types of Communication

There are various forms of wireless communication. Succinct details about them can be read below:

  • Wi-Fi – This uses router to transfer the information to the user wirelessly. The user should be in proximity of the router to access the network. User should protect this network with a password to avoid any kind of data threat.
  • Bluetooth Technology – It helps in establishing a wireless connection between two or more than two devices for data transfer.
  • Infrared (IR) wireless communication – In this type of communication, information is shared between transmitter (source) and a receiver (destination). IR is an electromagnetic energy that has a longer wavelength and mainly used for short and medium-range communication.
  • Satellite Communication – This type of communication requires space segment and ground segment. Signal is sent to satellite, which the satellite amplifies and sends it back to the antenna receiver located on the earth surface.
  • Mobile Communication Systems – In this system, mobile phones are used to communicate across a single frequency band.
  • Global Positioning System (GPS) – It provides variation services wirelessly such as location, navigation, positioning, speed, etc.
  • Radio Broadcasting – It is the first wireless service. It is a communication system wherein information is transmitted only in one direction and all the users receive the same data.

This technology comes with numerous features that benefit people in their daily life. Some of the key features of Wireless are mentioned below:

  • No need of any physical connection between two or more points to transfer information.
  • Wireless communications are cost effective, as it do not entail the use of wired connection, physical infrastructure and maintenance practices.
  • It makes communication flexible means people can communicate regardless of their location.
  • Wireless technology helped in connecting remote areas where online education, online shopping, access to social media, news, video call, etc. is now possible.
  • Wireless connectivity ensure fast response in case of emergencies or in case of any other important work.

Applications of Wireless Technologies

This technology is deployed in different fields for various purposes. Some of them are listed here:

  • Health Care – Wireless networks are established in doctor's offices, emergency rooms, patient waiting areas, critical care wards, nursing stations, etc.
  • Education – Elementary schools and colleges install wireless for beneficial reasons like online classes, online assignment, checking e-mail, access specialized school applications, surfing the Web, check grades, and view transcripts.
  • Inventory Control – The use of wireless technologies assist in managing the manufacturing processes at lower operating cost. Wireless technology helps a company to track and update inventory in real time, increase efficiency and accuracy, etc.
  • Real Estate – Now a day, it is easier to get Real estate deals than before. Wireless technology has put the things like selling a property, renting a property, etc. online.
  • Location-Based Services – With the wireless technology, it is possible to track position of moving objects.
