FMGE exam commonly known as the Foreign Medical Graduate Examination (FMGE) 2025 exam is conducted and organized by the National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences (NBEMS). The exam is conducted biannually in computer-based mode, generally in July and December. The FMGE December 2025 session exam official dates have not been released this year and will be updated once it is out. The FMGE registration process 2025 is over now, and june session exam will be conducted on July 26, 2025

The medical licensing exam is prevalent among post-graduate medical practitioners who have earned international degrees and wish to practice in India. Several candidates have doubts about the number of attempts/limits allowed on the FMGE exam. With NBEMS conducting the exam every year, this question has gained traction among the aspirants who have not been able to earn a medical license to practice medicine in India. How Many Attempts Are Allowed for the FMGE Exam?

Q:   What will be the total marks for FMGE June 2025 session?
A:

The FMGE 2025 question paper will carry 300 marks. Also, there will be 300 questions in the exam. Each question will carry 1 mark. To attempt each section, 2 hours and 30 minutes will be allotted.  The question paper will be divided into two parts, comprising 150 questions in each section.

Q:   Can I appear for FMGE exam in Hindi language or any other regional language?
A:

No, the FMGE exam is conducted only in English medium. A candidate cannot appear for the FMGE 2025 exam in any other regional language. Unlike other competitive exams, there is no other medium of language introduced on this entrance exam.

Q:   How many exam centre options are available in FMGE exam?
A:

The NBEMS released a total of 47 cities which are available while filling the application form of FMGE 2025. The FMGE exam centre list is mentioned in the admit card. Applicants are advised to check the details mentioned in the FMGE admit card 2025, and in case of any concerns, the students need to contact the authorities.

There is no limit on the number of attempts a candidate can take to appear for the FMGE exam. NBEMS allows candidates to avail of the medical license if they wish to practice the medical profession in India. Therefore, there is no limit or restriction on the FMGE attempts allowed for candidates.

However, in case a candidate has cleared the exam and has received the medical license, then the candidate will not be allowed to appear for the exam. The FMGE license stands valid for a lifetime, and aspirants need to repeatedly appear for the exam to avail it.

Who is Eligible to Apply for the FMGE exam?

Find out the FMGE exam eligibility criteria to appear for the exam:

  1. The candidate must be an Indian national or an Overseas Citizen of India (OCI). Only such candidates are eligible to apply for the FMGE exam.
  2. Interested aspirants should possess a primary medical qualification, which is confirmed by the Indian Embassy concerned. In addition, the candidates will have to submit proof of primary medical qualification. If someone fails to submit the required documents within the stipulated time, he will not be considered eligible for the FMGE exam.
  3. The candidate should have obtained an ‘Eligibility Certificate’ from the National Medical Commission (or the erstwhile Medical Council of India).
  4. The result of the final examination for primary medical qualification will be declared online. 

FMGE Exam – Exceptions for Candidates

A candidate seeking provisional or permanent registration in India shall not have to qualify for the Screening Test if he/she holds an Under Graduate medical qualification from Australia/Canada/New Zealand/United Kingdom/United States of America and the holder thereof has also been awarded a Post Graduate medical qualification in Australia/ Canada/New Zealand/ United Kingdom/United States of America and has been recognised for enrolment as a medical practitioner in that country.

Q:   How many candidates qualified FMGE exam last year?
A:

All the applicants who appear in the FMGE exam and secure a total of 150 marks out of the total 300 marks are declared FMGE qualified candidates.  

Last year in 2023, a total 38,355 candidates, appeared for the FMGE exam. Out of the total participated in the exam, 30,046 students failed and only 8309 could pass this examThe passing percentage was around 23%.

Q:   Can I apply for the FMGE exam without having MBBS degree?
A:

No, Students who want to appear & qualify FMGE exam must have a MBBS degree. FMGE exam is conducted for the students who completed their MBBS degree from abroad and they want to practise in India. Though there are certain countries like UK, USA, Austraila, Canada & New Zeland, students passed from these countries don't need to appear in FMGE exam to practise in India. 

Q:   What is the maximum time frame to complete MBBS degree to be eligible for FMGE exam?
A:

Candidates are advised to complete their MBBS degree programme by October 31, 2024 and must submit a proof of passing the same while applying for the FMGE exam. 

If any applicants fail to substantiate their claim of having passed the primary medical qualification by the above mentioned prescribed cut off date with supportive documents, his/her candidature shall be cancelled.

About the Exam

FMGE December 2025 exam will be conducted in online mode (computer-based format). The medium of the examination will be English. No other language is allowed in which candidates can appear for the exam. Candidates will be evaluated based on 300 multiple-choice questions (Objective-type questions). There will be two shifts of the FMGE exam which will be held in a single day of 2 hours and 30 minutes each. Candidates can switch between the sections to attempt the questions. There is no sectional time limit to appear for the exam.

FMGE Marking Scheme

According to the FMGE exam pattern, all the questions in the FMGE question paper will have equal weightage. One mark will be awarded for every correct answer. No marks will be awarded/ deducted for incorrect answers. The examination will be conducted in two phases – Part A and Part B of 2 hours and 30 minutes each.

FMGE Pass Percentile

According to the FMGE guidelines which are released by NBEMS, a candidate needs to score at least 50% marks in the examination to qualify for the FMGE exam. Only those candidates will be entitled to get an FMGE certificate who pass the exam by securing the minimum qualifying marks.
