How Does Data Packets Flow in a Hybrid Topology?

Data packets flow within each sub-network based on the rules of its specific topology (e.g., broadcast in bus, point-to-point in star). When data needs to travel between different sub-networks, the interconnecting devices, like hubsrouters, or switches, route the data packets based on their destination addresses, ensuring the packets reach the intended devices across different sub-networks.

Types of Hybrid Topology in Computer Network

There are mainly three types of hybrid topology in a computer network:

Star-Ring Hybrid Topology: It combines the Star and Ring topology by connecting Star topologies through a wired ring connection. The data flow in this topology can be uni or bi-directional, depending on the configuration. It is ideal for organizations that require high-speed data transfer, reliability, and scalability.

Star-Ring Hybrid Topology Diagram

Star-Bus Hybrid Topology: It combines the Star and Bus topology by connecting multiple Star networks to a single cable of the Bus Topology. It is ideal for medium to large organizations that require high connectivity between their network devices.

Star-Bus Hybrid Topology Diagram

Hierarchical Network Topology: It combines Star-Ring and Star-Bus Hybrid topology. The topology consists of three types of nodes: 

  • Root Node (central node and the top tier of the hierarchy) 
  • Child Node (connected to the Root Node and serves as a parent to other nodes) 
  • Leaf Node (represents the end nodes that are connected to the Child Nodes)

  • Risk of single points of failure within bridge devices or connections, compromising network reliability.
  • Combining diverse topologies might necessitate additional security measures due to potential vulnerabilities.
