The actual number of vacancies for each service was not mentioned in the UPSC 2021 notification. The expected number of vacancies for the IAS and IPS are known based on the previous year's trends and the recent announcement made by the Honourable Minister of State for the Ministry of Personnel. The number of vacancies in the IAS 2020 exam is increased from the notified 796 to 836 vacancies.
The UPSC recruit around 800 to 900 candidates every year through the Civil Services exam for the two All-India Services and various Central Civil Services. The number of IAS recruited every year by UPSC is 180 and the number of vacancies for IPS was increased from 150 to 200 since 2020. The rest of the vacancies are released by the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) after the completion of the exam process every year. But this was the first time that the UPSC vacancy break was released just after the release of IAS notification.
