The portal for document upload and freezing of IISER preferences for IISER 2026 Admissions is expected to begin in the month of July 2026, tentatively. After accepting the offer and paying the seat acceptance fee, the candidate can exercise two options:
- Candidate can FREEZE the seat (they will not participate in further rounds of counselling),
- Candidate can FLOAT (they will participate in further rounds of counselling to get their higher preferences). The FLOAT option is activated by default for those who pay the seat acceptance fee. A student who has chosen to FLOAT will again be considered for seat allocation in the next round. If they are eligible to secure a seat in an IISER that is higher in their preference list than the currently accepted one, they will be offered that seat.

Factors Affecting IISER 2026 Rankings
There are several factors that can affect the relationship between marks and rank in IISER:
- Individual Score: The score of IISER exam is decided by combining the scores of the A, B and C sections of the exam. This directly affects your rank.
- Number of Applicants: As the number of applicants increases, the same score may not be enough and can affect your IISER 2026 ranking. With more applicants, the competition also increases and even a good score may not be enough.
- Difficulty level: The overall difficulty level of the IISER exam also affects both marks and rank. As the exam becomes tougher, a lesser number of students can score well, which means that your rank may go up even if your score is lower.
- Availability of Seats: The number of seats for different programs in M.Sc. and Integrated M.Sc. programs is also different. If a program has a smaller number of seats, then the competition will be high. This will mean that your rank may go down for a similar score as compared to other programs where more seats are available.
- Category Reservation: Like most exams in India, IISER also provides category reservation. In this case, separate cutoffs will be released, and accordingly, your rank will change.

It is quite difficult for the GEN / OBC category to get admission to IISER with 50 marks. Even the reserved category students have less chance in the later counelling round for admission. To secure admission, students must score above 150 marks.
