The India Today-MDRA ranks suggest that the institutes are ranked based on Objective (academics, personality development, placements, etc.) and Perceptual (how employers and academicians perceive) scores. But there are nuances, too. Look at some examples when you are checking the ranks of the top science colleges in Mumbai here. 

• Placements: Kishinchand Chellaram College has better placement scores than Mithibai College and St. Xavier’s College, but falls short on its rankings, as the Objective scores are higher for the latter two. It has improved by one position from last year. 
• Infrastructure: SVKM's NMIMS, Sunandan Divatia School of Science, which ranks much below, scores the highest in infrastructure, with superior facilities like high-end computer labs and the latest equipment for ease of research, and is better than the rest. • Student Intake: The higher cutoffs also indicate why some science colleges in Mumbai can be tougher to get into, with a higher number of applicants and highly selective seats. At the best science colleges in Mumbai, fees can differ. Do factor in infrastructure (labs and accommodation), funding from societies or trusts, specialisation, affiliations, location and interconnectivity. B.K. Birla, with its location in Kalyan (western part of MMR), is much more affordable, with a general BSc course starting at ~INR 14,700, than other institutes in main city areas such as Churchgate or Vile Parle West. Also, the specialisations can change the fee ranges, too, even when the same institute offers different courses.
