NID Application is expected to open in the first week of September 2027 . Aspirants can go through the NID eligibility criteria for BDes and MDes admissions at NID. Only candidates who meet the eligibility criteria should apply for admission. The exam will be conducted in the January 2027 .

If you are planning to apply for admission to the NIDs, you must not only crack the NIFT 2027 exam but also meet the program-specific NID DAT 2027 eligibility criteria. Note that if you don't meet the eligibility conditions, you may be disqualified at any stage of the admission process.

While filling the NID Application Forms, candidates must meet the NID DAT 2027 eligibility criteria for the program they are applying to. NID Entrance Exam Eligibility Criteria for UG Admissions 2027

B.Des course offered by NID campuses is of a four-year duration. Admission to the program is open to candidates who not only qualify for the NID DAT 2027 entrance exam but also meet the eligibility criteria prescribed by the institute.

NID B. Des Admissions 2027: Qualifying exams

  • The candidate must have passed the 10+2 exam 
  • Those appearing in the 10+2 exam in the academic year 2027-2028 may also appear.
  • Students from any stream (Science, Arts, Commerce, Humanities, etc.) may apply.

Accepted Education boards: CBSE, IB, ICSE, or equivalent.

Examinations considered equivalent are given below:

  • 10+2 system under a central or state board recognized by the Association of Indian Universities (AIU).
  • Intermediate or two-year pre-university examination under a board or university recognized by the Association of Indian Universities (AIU).
  • Final examination of the two-year course of the Joint Services Wing of the National Defence Academy.
  • Senior secondary school examination under the National Institute of Open Schooling, with a minimum of five subjects.
  • Any public school, board, or university examination completed in India or from any foreign country recognized as equivalent to the 10+2 system by the Association of Indian Universities (AIU)
  • HSC vocational examination.
  • General Certificate Education (GCE) examination at the Advanced (A) level taken in London, Cambridge, or Sri Lanka.
  • High School Certificate Examination from Cambridge University or an International Baccalaureate diploma from the International Baccalaureate Office, Geneva.
  • AICTE approved three-year full-time Diploma after Class X offered by Board of Technical Education of any state in India or Union Territories as mentioned on http://www.aicte-india.org/statisticbote.php.
  • Candidates who have completed final examinations for Class XII (or equivalent) outside India or from a board not specified above should produce a certificate from the Association of Indian Universities (AIU) confirming that the examination they have passed is equivalent to the Class XII examination conducted in India.

Q:   When will the eligibility criteria of NID DAT 2027 be released?

The National Institute of Design (NID) will release the eligibility criteria for the NID DAT for the B.Des and M.Des courses through the respective admission handbooks. The eligibility criteria outlines requirements like academic qualification, minimum marks, age limit, number of attempts, etc.  

Q:   What is the academic criteria for admission to the M.Des programme through NID DAT 2027?
A: 

Candidates seekling admission to the M.Des programme must have complete their 3-year or 4-year Bachelor Degree programme in any discipline.

Candidates who have done full-time Diploma of minimum 4-year duration in Design/Fine Arts/Applied Arts/ Architecture, after 12th standard or equivalent to 12th standard, from any university or institute recognised by law in India, may also apply. 

Q:   What is the academic criteria for admission to the NID DAT 2027 B.Des program?
A: 

Applications for NID DAT 2027 will open in September 2026 (tentatively). Candidates who have passed or will appear for higher secondary (10+2) qualifying examinations in the academic year 2027–28 in any stream (Science, Arts, Commerce, Humanities etc.) from any recognised board of education such as CBSE, IB, ICSE or equivalent could apply.

Q:   What is the age limit for admission to the B.Des programme through NID DAT 2027?
A: 

Indian Nationals belonging to General Category and General EWS Category need to be born on or after 1 July 2006 to apply for admission. Relaxation of 3-year and 5-year applies to candidates belonging to OBC-NCL.ST/SC and PwD candidates respectively.

  • For Indian Nationals in General Category and General EWS Category: Only those candidates born on or after 1 July 2006 are eligible to apply for admission.
  • For Indian Nationals in Reserved Category (Other Backward Class-Non Creamy Layer (OBC-NCL), Scheduled Caste (SC), Scheduled Tribe (ST): Only those candidates born on or after 1 July 2001 are eligible to apply for admission.
  • For Indian Nationals in PwD Reserved Category: Only those candidates born on or after 1 July 2001 are eligible to apply for admission.

Yes, candidates who have passed their H.S.C. vocational examination may apply for admission to the B.Des program.

Q:   Is NID DAT cutoff same for all categories?
A: 
No, NID Entrance Exam cutoff is released separately for the various categories. For instance, the cut-off is available for categories like Open, OBC-NCL, SC, ST, and PH categories. Note that open category candidates will not be considered for admission under reserved category seats. However, candidates belonging to reserved category will be considered for admission under both open and the reserved category they belong to. To be considered for admission under reserved category, the candidate must furnish the required category certificates. However, any candidate who is found using counterfeit documents can be disqualified at any stage of the admission process.
Q:   What happens if I fail to qualify NID DAT (Prelims)?
A: 

The results of the DAT Prelims will include the qualifying status of the candidate. If the candidate fails to qualify in DAT Prelims, he or she will not be eligible to appear in DAT Mains.

Note that the Desing Aptitude Test (DAT) conducted by the National Institute of Design (NID) has two sub-exams: DAT Prelims and DAT Mains.

Both the exams are mandatory.

Also, the final merit list is prepared by giving weighatage to DAT Prelims and DAT Mains. So, if a can candidate fails to qualify DAT Prelims or doesn’t appear in DAT Mains, the candidate will be disqualified from the admission process.

Q:   Q: What is NID cutoff?
A: 
NID cutoff is the minimum score that candidates need to obtain in order to be considered for admissions to a design course. The participating institutes of NIDs offer B. Des and M.Des courses. The cut-off would be released category-wise for each of these programs. Also, the cut-off would be released separately for all the coaching institutes. Only such candidates who meet the cut-off criteria would be considered for admission.

NID DAT eligibility criteria 2027 (M.Des) - Qualifying Exam 

Candidates must meet the following criteria:

  • Bachelor’s degree of a minimum four-year duration in any discipline from a recognized university or college, or
  • Bachelor’s degree of minimum three-year duration in any discipline from a recognized university or college, or

Q:   Who is eligible to appear in NID that Mains exam?
A: 
The NID that exam is conducted in two stages - that Prelims and that Mains. Candidates who qualify that Prelims has to next appear in that Mains. The shortlisting for that Mains is done on the basis of scores obtained by candidates in the that Prelims exam. The that Prelims scorecard, along with section-wise scores, also contains the qualifying status of the candidate. Candidates who status says "qualified" can appear in that Mains.
Q:   What is the cutoff for NID admissions?
A: 

NID cutoffs vary from course to course as well as the reservation category to which candidates belong. 

 The cut-off depends on a multitude of factors, including the category of the candidate, the seat intake, total applicants, the candidate's performance in the NID DAT exam, etc. If any of these parameters change, the cut-off would also change.

Q:   What is the criteria to shortlist candidates for DAT Mains of NID?
A: 
NID officials will consider the Merit list of that Prelims to shortlist candidates for DAT Mains. The number of candidates shortlisted will be no less than three times in each category. The National Institute of Design will prepare merit lists for GENERAL, GENERAL-EWS, OBC-NCL, SC, ST, PwD & OVERSEAS categories. In the scenario where two or more candidates score the same marks in the DAT Prelims, then a tiebreak policy will be applied to decide the merit rank.
Q:   Is it necessary to upload the relevant category certificate for NID?
A: 

Yes, if you belong to any reserve category, then it is necessary to upload the required category Certificate. The documents have to be uploaded at the time of filling out the NID application form. Note that candidates trying to use counterfeit documents may be disqualified at any stage of the admission process if caught. The NID DAT counseling will also have a document verification process. The counseling process for the B. Des and M.Des programme will commence soon after the results are declared.

NID DAT 2027 Eligibility Criteria M.Des - Overseas Category

To apply under the overseas (Supernumerary) category, the candidate must meet the following conditions:

  • Age Limit: The candidate must be born on or after July 1, 1995.
  • Qualifying exam: The candidate must have passed: 
    • Bachelor’s degree of minimum four-year duration in any discipline from a recognized university or college, or

    • Bachelor’s degree of minimum three-year duration in any discipline from a recognized university or college, or 

    • Full-time diploma of minimum four-year duration in Design/ Fine Arts/ Applied Arts/ Architecture passed from a recognized university or college after clearing Class 12. However, candidates must have passed/ have appeared for/ be appearing for the diploma exams at the time of document verification, tentatively scheduled in May 2027.

NID Eligibility Criteria 2027 for Overseas Category

Foreign citizens (candidates holding citizenship of any country other than India) can apply for the NID entrance exam 2027 only under the overseas (Supernumerary) category, provided they fulfill all the eligibility criteria. 15% supernumerary seats are available for Overseas candidates.

NID DAT 2027 Eligibility Criteria B.Des - Overseas Category

Overseas candidates seeking admission to B.Des need to meet the following eligibility criteria:

  • The candidate must be born on or after July 1, 2005.
  • The candidate must have passed the 10+2 exam (any stream) equivalent to CBSE, IB, or ISC.

Other Information related to NID DAT Overseas category

  • Candidates under Overseas (supernumerary) category fall outside the ambit of seats reserved for the GEN-EWS, OBC-NCL, SC, ST and PwD categories. Such candidates cannot avail the facility of age relaxation, scribe, etc.
  • Candidates under the Overseas (supernumerary) category must pay fees as per the Overseas fee structure.
  • Candidates holding OCI and PIO cards will have to apply only under the Overseas (supernumerary) category.
  • Candidates must possess a valid passport. The candidate must ensure that the passport is current (not expired) at the time of applying online.
  • Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) holding an Indian passport are not eligible to apply under the Overseas (supernumerary) category and will have to apply as Indian nationals.

Both institutions offer the BDes course but with completely different admission processes. IIT Indore accepts admission based on the UCEED entrance exam, while BITS Pilani considers the NID Entrance exam/ BITSAT exam result.
