JEE Advanced (formerly known as IIT-JEE) is one of the toughest engineering entrance examination for admissions to the IITs in India. Students from all over the country spend hours preparing for this exam. Time management and strategy are two important aspects which need to be followed with precision in order to succeed in the exam.
JEE Advanced 2017 is scheduled to be held on Sunday, May 21 as per the schedule given below:

- There will be two question papers, each of three hours duration. Both the question papers will consist of three separate sections on Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics. They will be of objective type, designed to test comprehension, reasoning and analytical ability of candidates.
- The question papers will consist of objective type (multiple choice) and numerical answer type questions designed to test comprehension, reasoning and analytical ability of candidates.
- Incorrect answers to some of the questions will be awarded negative marks.
- The question paper will be in either English or Hindi. Candidates must exercise the choice of question paper language while registering for JEE Advanced 2017.
JEE Advanced requires huge preparation as it comprises the syllabus of Class XI & XII which further contributes about 45% and 55% of IIT-JEE question-papers respectively. Ramesh Batlish, FIITJEE expert believes that while preparing all the chapters of Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics, stress may be given in particular on the following topics. He also shares tips for excelling in different subjects of the exam below:
JEE Advanced 2017 - Mathematics:
Important Topics: Quadratic Equations & Expressions, Complex Numbers, Probability, Vectors & 3D Geometry, Matrices in Algebra; Circle, Parabola, Hyperbola in Coordinate Geometry; Functions, Limits, Continuity and Differentiability, Application of Derivatives, Definite Integral in Calculus. |
- Previous JEE papers suggest that more attention should be paid to topics like Vectors and 3-D than Probability or Indefinite integration as vectors and 3-D offers very less scope to examiner, as far as variety in problem is concerned. One more chapter is Complex Number, every year 2-3 problems (of purely complex no.) are asked. Hence mastering complex numbers, vectors, 3-D and Definite integral must be on top priority.
- Algebra can be made easier if you have the ability to picture functions as graphs and are good at applying vertical and horizontal origin shifts carefully as zeroes of functions and other specific values can be done in much less time using these techniques.
- Differential calculus is another important topic for which one should specialize in solving roots of equations, with the utilization of Rolle’s and Lagrange’s theorems.
- Complex numbers can be used to solve questions in co- ordinate geometry too. Trigonometric questions require applications of De Moivre’s theorem.
- Permutation - Combination and Probability is another very important topic in algebra .You need to be thorough with the basics of Bayes theorem, derangements and various ways of distribution, taking care of cases where objects are identical and when they are not.
- Integral calculus can be simplified using tricks and keeping in mind some basic varieties of integrable functions. Remembering the properties and applying them wisely saves lot of time.
- Excelling in Coordinate geometry depends on proper knowledge of parametric forms of various conic sections. Further, one should be highly capable of converting the tougher parts to these basic forms; which will help in simplification.
- Matrices can be related to equations, hence a 3x3 matrix can actually be visualized as being three-planed in 3D geometry. Determinants have some very nice properties, for instance, the ability to break them into two using a common summand from a row/ column, which should be made use of in tougher questions.
- Practice Mathematics as much as you can while taking cue from previous years’ JEE papers.
JEE Advanced 2016 – Chemistry:
Chemistry: Qualitative Analysis, Coordination Chemistry & Chemical Bonding in Inorganic Chemistry, Electrochemistry, Thermodynamics, Chemical Equilibrium in Physical Chemistry and Organic Chemistry Complete as a topic. |
- Improve your focus with respect to topics such as conceptual clarity, application skills and awareness to the prescribed syllabus.
- Stress more on topics such as Mole concept, Chemical Equilibrium and Electrochemistry.
- Practice Organic chemistry more while improving your hold on topics like Stereochemistry, GOC (General Organic Chemistry) and Functional Group Analysis.
- Pay extra attention to topics like Chemical Bonding and Coordination Chemistry as they are highly conceptual.
- In Inorganic chemistry most of the questions which are asked are really conceptual, concerned with structures, processes and applications. Special attention is a must to the topics like Chemical Bonding and Coordination Chemistry.
JEE Advanced 2017 – Physics:
Physics: Mechanics, Fluids, Heat & Thermodynamics, Waves and Sound, Capacitors & Electrostatics, Magnetics, Electromagnetic Induction, Optics and Modern Physics. |
- A vast part of JEE Advanced consists of questions related to physics and is also important in terms of marks. So, a lot of practice is required for this topic.
- Other scoring topics consist of Optics, Electricity and Magnetism, etc.
- Some subjects which require extra attention constitute Kinematics and Particle dynamics. These are important parts of Mechanics and are regularly witnessed in JEE papers.
- According to the general trends, Mechanics and Electricity and Magnetism are the most important topics in terms of the number of questions asked in JEE of previous years.
- Thermodynamics is important from the terms of both Physics and Chemistry so concentrate on that as well. It is wise to cover Wave Optics first in ‘Optics’ topic. The reason is that the portion is smaller compared to Ray Optics thus quick to cover.
- In the decreasing order of the marks they carry, listed below are different topics of Physics according to their appearance in previous year’s papers:
- Mechanics and Electricity and Magnetism (Equal importance): Mechanics is one topic of Physics that is considered less scoring by most experts. However to add to the dilemma this is also the topic that forms the major portion of the JEE (Advanced) in terms of marks. So this topic cannot be neglected.
- Modern Physics
- Optics
- Heat, Thermodynamics and Waves and Sound
- Measurement and errors

No, your candidature will be rejected as you need to have minimum of 75% in class 12 to be eligible for admisison to the IITs, NIT, IIITs and GFTIs via the JoSAA counselling. Even if you pass JEE Advanced and JEE Main, of you do not have 75% minimum marks in class 12 boards you will no get admission

As per the analysis of the previous year data, the candidates belonging to general category must aim to score around 180 marks out of 360 to qualify the exam. 180+ marks will be a safe zone and will ensure that you pass the exam for IIT admissions. However, note that this marks will not get you a go
