Pune's Akshat Chugh emerged as the second topper of JEE Advanced 2017. With an AIR 2, he secured an overall score of 335 out of 366 in the exam. Besides this, he also scored 98 per cent in the CBSE Class XII results which was announced recently. The 17 year also one of the JEE Main 2017 toppers and bagged an AIR 7 in the exam.
Securing an AIR 2 in the one of the most competitive engineering exams of the country was a dream come true for this topper. An ecstatic Akshat said, " It feels amazing to be in the top 5 of such an examination. My parents were very proud of me and were really happy. Because the JEE Advanced 2017 answer keys had come a week before results, I was expecting a rank in top 5".
According to him, what worked in his favour was his two years of consistent, focused and strategic preparation for the exams. He believes that to get a good rank in the exam one needs to have conceptual clarity and a clear strategy.
In an interview with Shiksha, Akshat Chugh, JEE Advanced 2017 Topper AIR 2, talks about the difference between the preparation strategy of JEE Advanced and JEE Mains. He also shares important success tips for future engineering aspirants. Read the full interview below.
Q. Congrats on your achievement. So, which board have you studied under and from which school? What was your XII board marks?
Thanks a lot. I am from CBSE board and have studied in DPS(Delhi Public School, Pune). My Class 12th percentage is 98%.
Q. What is your subject wise and overall score?
My JEE Advanced 2017 score was: Physics – 101; Chemistry – 112; Maths – 122. My overall score 335/366.
Q. How long have you been preparing? And what was your study plan like for JEE Advanced 2017? What is the minimum time frame needed to prepare for JEE ?
I have been preparing seriously for JEE for the last 2 years. I have always believed that conceptual clarity is the key for clearing JEE. According to me, I guess atleast 1 year of proper preparation is needed to clear JEE Mains as questions are asked from a variety of topics.
Q. How was the preparation for JEE Advanced different from JEE Main?
I was focusing on memorizing important formulas and reactions because direct questions are often asked in JEE Mains. For Advanced, I focused on concepts as questions are mainly conceptual and do not require a lot of memorization.
Q. What was your JEE Main 2017 rank and score?
I gave JEE Mains in offline mode and my score in JEE Mains was 345/360. I secured an AIR of 7.
Q. What did you do to improve your weak areas?
When I felt I was weak at a topic, I solved multiple questions of that topic to try and clear the concepts. I also took help from the teachers at my coaching institutes.
Q. Have you taken any other exam besides JEE Main and Advanced?
Besides these two, I only gave BITSAT. My score in BITSAT was 446.
Q. Did you take coaching? Do you think coaching is required to crack JEE?
I took coaching classes from Bakliwal Tutorials. I believe coaching is not required as plenty of people each year clear the exam without coaching. However, coaching does give you an edge as the guidance from teachers is invaluable.
Q. Did you use mock tests and sample papers for preparations? Do you think to practicing from previous year question papers help and how?
Yes, I gave numerous mock tests and I believe they are very helpful for studying for JEE. Previous year question papers too are of great help.
Q. Any important books you would like to suggest for future aspirants?
The only book which I feel is essential for cracking JEE is Concepts of Physics by HC Verma.
Q. Which IIT are you aiming at and which stream do you wish to pursue?
I am hoping to get Computer Science Engineering at IIT Bombay.
Q. Any tips for aspirants who would be taking the exam next year?
I would say study hard and smart and not get distracted. Due to the paper being easy to moderate this time, next year paper will probably be difficult.
Q. What are your future plans after BTech?
After BTech, I am not sure but I might pursue MSc or MTech.
Q. Tell us about yourself and your hobbies?
I like to read books and play video games. I enjoy spending time on Quora.
