What is Chemistry?

Chemistry is the branch of science that studies matter. A matter is anything and everything that you can see, feel, touch or experience for example a book, table, air, rock, tree etc. Chemistry studies the composition of these matters, what are they made up of, the change that happen when they are heated up or cooled.

Chemistry is subdivided into three main parts

  • Physical Chemistry
  • Inorganic Chemistry
  • Organic Chemistry

Physical chemistry is the study of macroscopic properties, atomic properties, and phenomena in chemical systems. In physical chemistry, we study rates of chemical reactions, the energy transfers that occur in reactions, or the physical structure of materials at the molecular level.

Inorganic chemistry is the study of chemicals that do not, in general, contain carbon. Inorganic chemicals are commonly found in rocks and minerals. One current important area of inorganic chemistry deals with the design and properties of materials involved in energy and information technology.

Organic chemistry is the study of chemicals containing carbon with hydrogen. Carbon is one of the most abundant elements on Earth and is capable of forming a tremendously vast number of chemicals. Most of the chemicals found in all living organisms are based on carbon.

NCERT Class XI Chemistry Chapters Overview

Some Basic Concepts of Chemistry

This chapters deals with the basic entity of Chemistry, Matter. Candidates will understand types of matter, measurement and properties.

Structure of Atom

The chapter structure of Atom deals with the building block of matter, atom. Atoms are the extremely small particles that are the basic building blocks of ordinary matter. Atoms join together to form molecules, which make up most objects. Different elements e.g. oxygen, carbon, uranium are made up of different types of atoms. An atom is the smallest unit of an element that will behave as that element.

Classification of Elements and Periodicity in Properties

This chapter teaches about periodic table, various elements in different groups of the table, their properties, acidity and basicity.

Chemical Bonding and Molecular Structure

This chapter comes with huge important in competitive exams as well as boards. Students will learn about various types of bonds, theories like VSEPR Theory and Valence Bond Theory are important topics in this chapter.

States of Matter

In this chapter students will learn about the three states of matter, Solid, Liquid and Gases. This chapter includes various properties of states of matter, the properties of changes when matter flows from one state to the other, type of bonding, melting and boiling points, role of gas laws in elucidating the concept of the molecule, intermolecular interactions.

Laws of matter combining forces like Boyle’s law, Charles’ law, Gay Lussac’s law, Avogadro’s law, ideal behavior, empirical derivation of gas equation, Avogadro’s number, ideal gas equation, deviation from ideal behavior, liquefaction of gases, critical temperature is also studied in this chapter.

Thermodynamics

This is the chapter a student will see in every class in one form or the other beginning from class 11 to highest class of studies, PhD. Thermodynamics is the study of heat and its properties, the law governing its flow, changes into other forms and its classification. From exam point of view, this chapter is very important.

Redox Reactions

Redox reactions are chemical reactions that include transfer of electrons between two reactants. In this chapter students will learn about types of redox reactions and decomposition reactions.

Hydrogen

The most abundant element in the entire universe is Hydrogen. In this chapter, students will learn about properties and preparation of hydrogen with its uses in daily life.

The s and p-Block Elements

S-block elements are Alkali and Alkaline earth metals that are group 1 and 2 elements in the periodic table. p-block elements are present between the 13th and 18th group in the periodic elements. In this chapter, students will learn about boron family, important compounds of boron, uses of aluminum and boron, carbon family, allotropes of carbon and important compounds of silicon and carbon.

Organic Chemistry- Some Basic Principles & Techniques

Organic Chemistry in class 11 is the beginning of wide world of Organic compounds. This chapter will introduce students to concepts about organic compounds, structural representation, classification, nomenclature, isomerism, purification of organic compounds and quantitative analysis. This chapter is important for entrance exams like JEE Mains as well as board exams.

Hydrocarbons

This is a very important chapter from exam point of view.  A lot of questions comes from this chapter in exam as well as in JEE Mains. A hydrocarbon is an organic compound consisting of hydrogen and carbon. Hydrocarbons are found in crude oil, natural gas, and coal among others. Students will learn about synthesis, preparation from alkyl halides, unsaturated hydrocarbons and carboxylic acids as well as its physical and chemical properties.

Environmental Chemistry

This chapter will guide students to various concepts that are related to environment like water pollution, atmospheric pollution, soil pollution and reasons that causes these types of pollution. Students will also learn about the use of pesticides to reduce soil pollution and strategies to control pollution like waste disposal. By learning this chapter thoroughly, students will get to know about the pollution occurring in nature by our activities.
