IIT Kanpur offers an MSc PhD integrated course in Physics specialisation. For admission to this course, Joint Admission Test for MSc (JAM) is conducted. It is an all-India examination conducted jointly by the Indian Institutes of Technology and Indian Institute of Science for admission to MSc, Joint MSc-PhD, MSc-PhD dual degree and other post-UG degree programmes at IITs and IISc. Transfer from MSc-PhD dual degree programme to MSc Physics programme is not permitted. However, for students admitted to the MSc-PhD dual degree programme, the MSc degree will be given after successful completion of all academic requirements of the first six semesters while working towards the PhD degree.

IIT Kanpur offers a regular Master of Science- Doctor of Philosophy Dual Degree (MSc+PhD) programme in one specialisation, namely Physics. Admission to this programme is entrance exam-based. The table below presents the admission related details of the programme:

A:

After JEE session 2 is completed, only those candidates who are aiming for IITs need to start preparing for JEE Advanced after clearing JEE Main. Those who are above the 98th percentile should start preparing for JEE Advanced as soon as possible. Those below this, between the 95th and 98th percentile, should focus on attempting more mock tests and previous year question papers so that they have a better chance of clearing JEE Advanced

A:

Admission to the BTech programme at IIT Kanpur is entrance exam-based, i.e., based on JEE Main followed by JEE Advanced scores. Candidates seeking admission to BTech can not get admission to IIT Kanpur with only the scores of JEE Main. JEE Advanced followed by JoSAA counselling is the final selection criteria followed by the institute. However, to be eligible for the BTech programme, students are required to have passed their Class 12 with at least 75% aggregate with Science subjects (i.e., Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics). Q:   Which exam do I need to write to pursue BS from IIT Kanpur?
A:

Candidates seeking admission to BS at IIT Kanpur must have a valid score in JEE Main, JEE Advanced and go through JoSAA counselling for final admission. Admission is completely entrance exam-based and candidates seeking admission can not get into IIT Kanpur with only the scores of JEE Main. JEE Advanced followed by JoSAA counselling is the mandatory requirement. Additionally, to be eligible for the BSc programme, students are required to have passed their Class 12 with at least 75% aggregate with Science subjects (i.e., Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics).

IIT Kanpur MSc+PhD Application Process 2022

The aspirants of MSc+PhD offered at IIT Kanpur should have met the basic eligibility for the course. Further, they need to apply for IIT-JAM by visiting the official website of its conducting body. To apply for IIT-JAM for MSc admission at IIT Kanpur, follow the step-wise application process demonstrated below:

Q:   Can I get admission in IIT Kanpur in BTech if my rank is between 0 and 5000?
A:

The cut off rank in Round 6 for BTech in Computer Science and Engineering is 238 which is very close to this range. This was for general category under All India quota. Unless the candidate belongs to some other category or domicile, one can not afford to score less than this. With this rank, there is a probability of getting admission however since, the cut offs keep changing from round to round, better ranks definitely increases your chances of getting admission in IIT Kanpur - Indian Institute of Technology.

Q:   What are the qualifying marks for JEE Mains 2026?
A:

Qualifying marks for JEE Mains 2026, also called qualifying percentile for JEE Mains will be announced by the NTA along with the JEE Main 2026 session 2 result. Candidates must note that qualifying percentile for JEE Mains 2026 is the minimum percentile required to appear in JEE Advanced 2026. For admission to NIT or IIITs, there is no provision of qualifying marks in JEE Mains 2026 and admission is given based on All India Rank in JEE Mains exam. NTA will announce JEE Mains 2026 All India rank in April after session 2 exam results. 

Q:   Does IIT Kanpur conduct any interview round for MTech admission?
A:

No, there is no interview round for M.Tech admission at IIT Kanpur. Admission offers for GATE-qualified candidates are displayed on the Common Offer Acceptance Portal (COAP). Students must register at the COAP portal to view and accept their offers. Registration on COAP portal is free. Additionally, candidates are advised to download COAP 2022 information brochure. COAP Registration number is mandatory to apply for M.Tech at IIT Kanpur admission portal. Candidates who have not qualified GATE are communicated directly by the department via e-mail.
