For admission to IIT Madras, candidates must pass Class 12 and graduation before applying for the course. As per the minimum eligibility requirements for the course, candidates need a BE/BTech/BArch degree or a master's in Science/Arts with a minimum of 60% aggregate (55% for SC/ST/PwD). Qualifications from exams by recognised professional societies are also accepted. Further, candidates will be selected based on a valid GATE score.

Apart from this, candidates who graduated from IITs with BTech degree and having CGPA of 8.0 (on a scale of 10) and above are eligible to apply for direct admission without GATE score. Ltd., VMock India Pvt. Ltd., and TATA Consultancy Services Limited. According to media reports, 1,722 students registered for the 2023 placement process. At the end of session 1.1, a total of 445 offers were made. Among these, 25 offers were of packages above INR 1 crore per annum. Further, 15 international offers were received from four companies. A total of 331 companies registered for phase I of IIT Madras placements in 2023. The institute recorded the highest-ever pre-placement offers of 407.
