JEE Advanced Eligibility - Who Can Apply
Check below the details about who can apply for the JEE Advanced exam. There are 5 major criteria:
JEE Main exam qualification: JEE Main can be considered as the screening test for JEE Advanced. Hence, to be eligible for JEE Advanced, candidates must pass the JEE Main cutoff for JEE Advanced which is announced with the JEE Main result and must be among the top 2.5 lakh rankers of the JEE Main.

JEE Advanced attempt limit: Candidates can apply for JEE Advanced if they have not already exhausted the attempt limit. One can apply for this exam twice in two consecutive years. Candidates taking the exam this year for the first time will be eligible for a second attempt in the next year only. Similarly, if a candidate has taken JEE Advanced in the previous year, they can take the exam again this year as their final attempt.
Year of passing class 12 boards: Also, candidates can apply for JEE Advanced if they are going to qualify the class 12 boards in the same year as the exam or have passed the class 12 exam just a year before the current exam year.
JEE Advanced age limit: A candidate should be not more than 24 years of age.
Previous IIT admissions: A candidate should NOT have been admitted to an IIT, irrespective of whether or not the candidate continued in the program OR accepted an IIT seat in the past.
Uniqueness of JEE Advanced Exam
V Ramgopal Rao, former IIT Delhi director, mentioned in an interview back in 2018 that JEE Advanced exam is "tricky and difficult" because it is framed in a way so that it can "reject candidates rather than select them".
High school students nationwide spend several years preparing for this exam. Many begin enrolling in JEE coaching programs as early as class 9 to enhance their chances of succeeding in the JEE Advanced examination. The preparation process is nothing short of a battle due to the exam's high difficulty, intense competition, unpredictable paper pattern, and low acceptance rate, all of which create immense pressure on aspirants. As a result, cracking this exam is considered a highly prestigious achievement. In 2024, out of the 180,200 candidates who appeared for the exam, only 48,248 were able to qualify.
Even after qualifying the exam, the battle does not stop. After the candidates pass the exam, they need to get a seat in the IITs. Every year, around 45,000 candidates pass JEE Advanced and register for JoSAA counselling, where around 18160 seats are offered across 23 IITs. This brings the selection rate to around 35%. In 2025, out of 54,378 qualified candidates, only 18,160 candidates were allotted seats in IITs.
You can prepare for all entrance tests at same time. It is a tough task but not impossible. For this a proper strategy is required. Here are some important tips.
- Compare the syllabus: All engineering entrance exams have almost the same syllabus. There might be some additional topics in some exams. The aspirant must study the syllabus for all exams and find out the topics that are extra, and prepare those separately. Almost 90% of the topics will be common for all entrance exams, and hence, syllabus completion for one exam will lead to completion of the syllabus for all the exams.
- Prepare for JEE Mains and incorporate the preparation for all other exams: Apart from JEE Advanced, all the exams are pretty straightforward for a well-prepared candidate. JEE Advanced require a higher level of preparation as the questions are multi-conceptual. However, the state-level entrance exams, and exams like BITSAT, VITEEE, etc., have direct questions. Most of the questions in JEE Mains are also direct and require the application of basic concepts. Hence, the candidates must prepare for one exam, like JEE Mains, that will cover their preparation for all other exams.
- JEE Advanced needs extra effort: For JEE Advanced candidates must focus on time management and building exam day temperament. Learn how to apply multiple concepts to a question.
The bottom line is to prepare for JEE Mains to cover the preparation for all other CETs and exams like BITSAT and VITEEE. For JEE Advanced, work on sharpening your skills of time management, stress handling, multiple concept application, speed and accuracy.
So far no student has ever scored full marks in JEE Advanced signifies exam's difficulty level. Highest marks one has achieved to date in JEE Advanced are 355 marks out of 360. Ved Lahoti scored these marks in 2024.

JEE Advanced Syllabus
The JEE Advanced exam syllabus is based on the chapters and topics that the candidates study in their class 11 and class 12. However, the Joint Admission Board (JAB) have prescribed the syllabus for the exam which the candidates are required to follow to prepare for the JEE Advanced exam. The official JEE Advanced syllabus is updated on the official website jeeadv.ac.in. The syllabus remains the same each year; however, some changes can be made over the year based on the changing scenarios.
Recent revision in JEE Advanced syllabus: It's worth noting that the syllabus has been updated from 2023 onwards. For the JEE Advanced exam, the syllabus saw changes in the year 2023 including the addition of statistics in mathematics, the removal of solution of triangles, and the exclusion of semiconductors and communications in physics, with some topics from JEE Main like forced and damped oscillations being added. Nuclear Chemistry was removed from the Chemistry syllabus and was made to biochemistry and physical chemistry parts.

JEE Advanced Exam Pattern
The exam pattern of JEE Advanced tends to change each year, which adds to its difficulty. As it is correctly put, “The devil you know is better than the devil you don't.” Apart from a few details, not a whole lot is revealed to the candidates before the exam about the exam pattern, marking scheme and type of questions.
The only details of JEE Advanced pattern that the candidates are informed of beforehand are:
- The exam duration: Paper 1 and Paper 2 timings are announced beforehand. Each paper is of 3 hours, making the exam a total of 6 hours.
- The subjects to be asked and the syllabus: The exam syllabus and the subjects are known to the candidates. Each paper of JEE Advanced has three subjects - Maths, Physics and Chemistry.
- The exam mode: Candidates are made aware of the computer-based format of the exam.
- Language of the exam: It is also informed to the candidates beforehand that the exam can be taken either in English or Hindi.
Details that stay ambiguous until the JEE Advanced exam day:
- Marking scheme: The JEE Advanced marking scheme changes each year. Negative marks may be awarded for incorrect answers to some of the questions. Questions may carry 1 mark, 2 marks, 3 marks or 4 marks. There are negative markings of -1 or -2, and some questions can also lead to no negative marking.
- Types of questions: The types of questions that are asked in JEE Advanced also change. The types of questions asked usually vary from MCQs with one or more than one correct answer, integer types questions, match the columns, and paragraph types questions.
The above details are provided in the “Instructions to Candidates” section at the time of examination.
Historical Timeline of IIT JEE Advanced
The Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Advanced, formerly known as IIT JEE, has a rich history dating back to 1961. Over the years, the exam has undergone several changes in its nomenclature and format.
- In 1961, the JEE Advanced as we know it today was first introduced as the Common Entrance Exam (CEE).
- In 2002, the All India Engineering Entrance Examination (AIEEE) was introduced as an additional exam for admissions to various national institutions, apart from the IITs.
- In 2013, the AIEEE was renamed JEE Main, while IIT-JEE became JEE (Advanced). JEE Main was established as the screening test for JEE Advanced, which is used for IIT admissions.
- In 2018, JEE (Advanced) transitioned from a pen-and-paper format to a computer-based test.
- In 2023, changes were made to the exam syllabus, which is in effect until the present year.
