Although, one obvious answer is to get into one of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), but what are some other reasons? Last year, out of 1,80,422 candidates who appeared for the exam, 26.7% qualified and 9.81% were allotted seats across 23 IITs. Additionally, the selection rate last year was 30.1%.
With such a low success rate in the IITs, one might imagine why so many candidates gravitate towards the JEE Advanced. Aspirants invest year after year to prepare for JEE Advanced for IIT admission. Shiksha Poll: What motivates you to tackle JEE Advanced, one of the toughest exams?
When asked “What motivates you to tackle JEE Advanced, one of the toughest exams?”, the following options were provided:
- Good career prospects
- Reputation of an IIT
- Family expectations
- Interest in engineering
- Others
The poll result indicated that interest in engineering is the highest motivator for the candidates to pursue JEE Advanced exam.
What the poll result indicate?
Primary Motivation: The majority of aspirants (27%) take JEE Advanced due to a genuine interest in the field.
Career and Prestige: 25% of candidates take the exam for the brand of IIT and the good career prospect associated with the IIT brand.
Family Expectations: 10% of the candidates take the exam due to expectation of their family.
Minority Influence: 14% of candidates said they have other reasons to take the exam.

JoSAA 2026 counselling for JEE Main and JEE Advanced qualifiers will begin in June 2026. The entire schedule of JoSAA counselling 2026 will be uploaded on josaa.nic.in.
No, your candidature will be rejected as you need to have minimum of 75% in class 12 to be eligible for admisison to the IITs, NIT, IIITs and GFTIs via the JoSAA counselling. Even if you pass JEE Advanced and JEE Main, of you do not have 75% minimum marks in class 12 boards you will no get admissions.
The JEE Advanced 2026 cutoff will be released with the results of JEE Advanced 2026. Until then, candidates can check below the JEE Advanced cutoff from the previous years:
The JEE Advanced 2025 cutoff of the common rank list is 20.56%; 18.50% for the GEN-EWS rank list and OBC-NCL rank list; 10.28% for SC, ST, and PwD rank lists across all categories; and 5.14% for Preparatory course rank lists.
All those candidates who score above the cutoff marks in their respective categories can register for JoSAA counselling to participate in the IIT seat allotment process. Note that qualifying the JEE Advaced cutoff will not guarantee a seat in the IITs. Various factors are at play while allotting seats in the IITs. These factors include the demand for a course and IIT, the number of seats on offer, the reservation criteria, etc.
The conducting IIT sometimes send the JEE Advanced result on the email of parents and candidates are provided while registering for the exam. However, in certain year the result is not sent via email. Hence, candidates whould not wait for the JEE Advanced result on their email and check it from the official website - jeeadv.ac.in as soon as the result is out.

Among the most well-known private engineering colleges are BITS Pilani, VIT University, Amrita University, SRM Institute of Science and Technology, and Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT). Yes, your son can easily appear for ongoing JoSAA 2026 counselling and the choice-filling process. However, to get a seat on IIT, your son must score 75% aggregate in the 12th CBSE for the general category, and for SC/ST/PwD, the score must be 65%.
