How to Avoid Negative Marking in BITSAT 2026?

How to Avoid Negative Marking in BITSAT: The Birla Institute of Technology and Science Admission Test (BITSAT) is one of the most competitive engineering entrance exams in India. Conducted by the Birla Institute of Technology and Science (BITS), it is known for its speed-based pattern and negative marking system. In BITSAT 2026, students get +3 marks for every correct answer and -1 mark for every wrong answer. Because of this marking scheme, random guessing can reduce your final score quickly. Many students lose 15-20 marks only due to incorrect attempts. In this article, we provide expert tips, strategies and common mistakes to avoid negative marking in BITSAT 2026. Check out a few tips on how to avoid negative marking in BITSAT.

Negative Markings in BITSAT 2026

Before planning your strategy, you must understand how negative marking works in BITSAT. For every correct answer, you get +3 marks. For every incorrect answer, 1 mark is deducted. Unattempted questions do not affect your score. This means that three wrong answers can cancel out one correct answer. If you guess blindly, you may lose more than you gain.

Many students feel pressure to attempt all 130 questions, but accuracy is more important than the number of attempts. Even if you attempt 105-110 questions with high accuracy, you can score better than someone who attempts all 130 with many wrong answers. The key is balance between speed and accuracy.

Why Avoiding Negative Marking is Important in BITSATs?

For every wrong answer in BITSATs (-1) mark will be deducted. This means after four wrong attempts a student loses the marks he/she obtained for attempting one question correctly. Even a slight percentile difference will bring a big change in the rank list.

Negative marking is not the only challenge in this exam. It is also a time-bound exam,  meaning candidates have to attempt 130 questions across 5 subjects within 3 hours. Students do not have time for guesswork and weighing in their chances while attempting the BITSAT question paper. Merely attempting the question will do more harm if the candidate is not sure about the accuracy. Thus, the right strategy is focusing on accuracy>attempts.

Q&A Icon
Commonly asked questions
Q:   How is BITSAT merit list prepared?
A:

BITSAT merit list will be prepared after checking performance of students in exam. Merit list will be released as admit and wait list. Students in admit list will be eligible for admission, while those in wait list will be called in for next round of allotment.

Q:   Will the BITSAT 2026 toppers list be announced?
A:

No. The BITS Pilani authorities do not announce the list of BITSAT toppers. However, if the list of toppers is released, the students will be able to access it here. Students will be scored as per their performance in the exam. If both exam sessions are attempted, then the best score will be considered for admission.

Tips to Avoid Negative Marking in BITSAT Exam

Till now we have covered what negative marking in BITSAT 2026 and its impact. Let's look at how we can minimise negative marking in BITSAT.

Avoid Overconfidence in Easy Questions

Sometimes students lose marks in easy questions because of overconfidence. They read the question quickly and mark the first option that looks correct. Later, they realize they misunderstood a word like “not” or “incorrect.”

Always read the full question carefully. Pay attention to units, signs, and keywords. Even if the question looks simple, take a few seconds to verify your calculation. Small attention to detail can save 4-5 marks easily.

Be Careful with Bonus Questions

In BITSAT, if you attempt all 130 questions, you get the option to solve 12 bonus questions. However, you cannot go back to change previous answers once you choose bonus questions. Some students attempt doubtful questions just to reach 130 and unlock bonus questions.

This can increase negative marking. Only attempt bonus questions if you are confident about most of your previous answers. Do not attempt risky questions just to unlock extra ones. Accuracy should always come first.

Attempt Questions in Rounds

A smart way to avoid negative marking is to attempt the paper in rounds. In the first round, solve only the questions you are 100% confident about. These are direct formula-based or concept-based questions. Do not waste time on difficult questions during this round.

In the second round, attempt moderately difficult questions where you are about 60-70% sure. In the final round, review doubtful questions. This method ensures that easy marks are secured first and reduces panic. It also lowers the chances of making mistakes.

Improve Time Management

BITSAT is a speed-based exam with 130 questions to be solved in 3 hours. Poor time management often leads to rushing in the last 30 minutes. Divide your time section-wise before the exam. For example, allocate fixed minutes for Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, English, and Logical Reasoning. Keep the last 20–25 minutes for revision. Proper time planning reduces stress and helps you think clearly before selecting an option.

Give Mock Tests

Practising the BITSAT mock tests cannot be emphasised enough. It is a simulation of the actual test. Candidates must take multiple BITSAT 2026 mock tests after covering a majority of the syllabus. This will help in learning time management and improving accuracy.

Solve Previous Year Papers

A time-tested way is practising the sample BITSAT question papers. Since the actual BITSAT question paper PDFs are not released by the authorities. The sample papers are a good alternative, which will help understand the difficulty level and the high-weightage BITSAT topics. Candidates can use this information to comprehend the frequently occurring types of questions and develop accuracy.

Set a Safe Attempt Target

Instead of aiming to attempt all 130 questions, set a realistic target based on your preparation level. For example, if your mock test accuracy is around 85%, you can safely attempt 110-115 questions. This strategy balances score and risk. Trying to attempt every question is not always smart. A controlled attempt strategy helps you avoid heavy negative marking and keeps your score stable.

To get admission to the BE course at the BITS Pilani Hyderabad Campus, students are required to appear in BITSAT. As per previous years' cutoff stats, it has been analysed that the minimum scores are between 230 and 250. But with 250 marks, the chances are less of getting selected.
