A number of members from the medical fraternity, and the Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal has extended solidarity towards the protesting resident doctors who faced police brutality on Monday.

As the protest by various resident doctors groups against the indefinite delay of NEET PG counselling intensified, a clash between Delhi Police took place with the protesting doctors. According to a statement issued by the Federation of Resident Doctors’ Association (FORDA), the doctors were brutally thrashed by the Police. The Association had organised the protest march on Monday has condemned the police action and announced that all healthcare institutions would be completely shut down.

"Resident Doctors, the so-called Corona Warriors, protesting peacefully to expedite NEET PG Counselling 2021 were brutally thrashed, dragged and detained by the police. There will be a complete shutdown of all Healthcare Institutions from today onwards,” it said in a statement.

As the horrific visuals of the police brutality started making rounds on different media platforms, members from the medical fraternity including students and aspirants have condemned this act by the Delhi Police and criticised the sheer injustice done towards the protesting doctors who were once praised as corona warriors for their selfless service during the peak of the pandemic.

Some have also criticised the silence of those who have maintained silence even after the horrific incident.

A student from KGMU Lucknow condemned the police brutality stating that it was unnecessary in a peaceful protest.

Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal writes to PM

Condemning the brutal act by the Police, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi requesting expediting the NEET PG 2021 counselling process and meeting their demands.

Health Minister Dr Mansukh Mandaviya Urges Resident Doctors to Call Off Strike

On the other hand, Dr Mansukh Mandaviya, Union Health Minister has urged the protesting resident doctors to call off the strike in a meeting held on Tuesday with a delegation of protesting resident doctors, in the larger interest of the public.

Dr Mandaviya was quoted as saying, “We are not able to do the counselling because the matter is sub judice before the Supreme Court. The government of India will submit a reply to the apex court before the scheduled date of hearing on January 6. We request the court to expedite the issue so that the counselling can be started at the earliest.”

Meanwhile, the protest entered its 12th day on December 28.

Doctors have also sought an official apology from the Delhi Police over their stern action during Monday’s march to Supreme Court. FORDA also marked December 27 as a black day in the history of the medical fraternity on account of the police brutality and sought support against the brutality.
