What is the role of SBI Clerk? State Bank of India conducts SBI Clerk exam to recruit eligible candidates for the post of Junior Associate (Customer Support & Sales) in the different branches of SBI. Junior Associates in SBI work as the single window operator and they are responsible for looking after the day-to-day activities of the bank. SBI Clerk is responsible for client-related operations and interactions. SBI Clerk is designated as depositors, cashiers and other posts. SBI Clerk is an entry-level post and they are the first point of contact for guidance and inquiries.

SBI Clerks are responsible for opening bank accounts, looking after the transactions related to the NEFT/RTGS, issuing demand drafts, issuing bank statements, transferring amounts through several payment modes, handling cheque book requests, etc. They also assist branch managers. SBI Clerks also have to perform general office-related tasks such as filing, faxing, scanning, and copying.

Single Window Operator (SWO)

  • Acknowledge when the inward emails are received
  • Giving acknowledgment in the counterfoil like the receipt of cheques, dividend warrants, paying of orders, drafts, etc.
  • Delivery of the cheque
  • Issuing the cash receipts
  • Recounting the currency notes
  • Clear and transfer cheques and vouchers
  • Receipts of cash as well as the issuance of pre-signed drafts/ gift cheques/ pay order/ bank order/travelers’ cheques etc

Head Cashier (HC)

  • Verification of endorsements/ vernacular signatures
  • Countersigning cheques/ drafts (on correspondence or selves), deposit reaccepts, payment orders, etc.
  • Attend the Government Treasury work
  • In cleaning and transferring the cheques

  • Checking the savings and current accounts
  • Signing the vouchers, drafts, mail transfers, cheques, pay orders, advices such as inter-branch fate calling advices, demand notices, bill schedules, statement certificates, etc.

Universal Teller (UT)

  • Receives cheques/ demand drafts/ withdrawal forms/ banker’s cheques, process and then verify the instrument, whether it is correctly drawn or not. Apart from that, they verify the customers’ account details
  • Verify the signature of the consumers, post transactions in the branch computer system, and authenticate/independently pass the payment of cheques/ demand drafts/ withdrawal forms/ banker’s cheques
  • Receive cash and issue counter slips/acknowledgments
  • Update the passbooks
  • Print and issue the remittance instruments

  • To assist the banking operations related to agricultural development for financial assistant to the small scale firms
  • To provide the application forms to the small farmers/ borrowers and assist them in filling the application form
  • Scrutinize the farm plans and application forms
  • To verify the farms’ machinery, tractors, pump sets, equipment, live stocks at stipulated intervals
  • To assist in the deposit mobilization efforts by encouraging the small borrowers/ farmers
  • For maintaining liaison with land record and registration offices and other developmental agencies for the handling of the banking works

SBI Clerks have immense growth opportunities for promotions compared to other banks. Candidates joining as Junior Associates will have an opportunity to reach the position of General Manager. Promotion in SBI Clerk is done in two ways-In cadre promotion and promotion to officer cadre.

What is SBI Clerk In Cadre Promotion?

  • This is a time-bound promotion and it is based on the home postings
  • After 10 years of their service, the assistant is promoted to the position of Senior Assistant
  • After 20 years of service, the assistant will be a Special Assistant
  • After 30 years of service, the assistant will become Senior Special Assistant

 What is SBI Clerk Promotion to Officer?

  • Once SBI Clerks complete three years, they are promoted to Trainee Officer
  • The trainee officer will be put on two years probation period
  • After the probation period, the candidates will go through a personal interview
  • After successfully passing the interview round, the candidates will be promoted to the Middle Management Grade (Scale II)
  • After completing six years or 12 years of service, they can become Scale I Officer, even in the Junior Management Grade
  • For faster promotion, candidates can crack CAIIB or JAIIB

Candidates who are in their final year/semester of graduation can apply provisionally as per SBI Clerk qualification. They need to produce proof of having passed the examination on or before the joining date.
