M.Sc. in Biomedical Genetics - Batch of 2022
4.2
VIT COVID Batch, which has better placement offers than expected.
Placements: In my batch around 60% of students got placement. As this is a Masters degree mostly pharmaceutical and CRO company comes for placement. Some are MNCs. Some top recruiting companies are Zifo, Elli Lilly, LabCorp and Biocon. 30% of students got internships which was later converted to full-time employment. The roles are offered mostly in clinical research and PV areas.
Infrastructure: VIT has a high-teach classroom and lab facility for better understanding. It has multiple buildings one can get lost also as the campus is very huge. The hostel and mess facility is as per as much money as you have. More fees range better experience in both hostel and food.
Faculty: The teaching quality is good, most of the faculty are helpful and will guide you patiently if you have any doubts. But there are some faculty members who are very rude. The course curriculum is very good it follows the global standards. The exam pressure is too much. We have very frequent exams, students get exhausted.
Other: The course I chose had both placement and higher studies options. Though my main goal was getting a placement, if I didn't get so I had a backup plan for higher studies abroad. Some syllabus could have been modified. The event and fest are the best thing about VIT.

Excellent infrastructure and technology with a great campus life.
Placements: Biomedical genetics does not have a lot of placements. However, each year the faculty tries its best to network with various hospitals and clinics and place its students such as Triesta Bangalore, Positive Biosciences, Mapmygenome etc. Genetic Counseling, now due to Dr. Radha Saraswathy, has good Genetic Counseling, has good clinical exposure at the hospitals and labs for its students for around 3 to 4 months. The exposure at hospitals and labs for its students is for around 3 to 4 months during the course. But more would be appreciated. Currently, there is no stipend for the students.
Infrastructure: It is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful campuses in the country. Excellent inter-connecting roads with lush and well-maintained greenery. There is a 3-storeyed air-conditioned library with facilities like computerized self-book issue and return. There are auditoriums, open halls, and gardens to conduct events. Free Wi-Fi up to 5 GB is available for students that can be accessed in almost all parts of the college including the hostel. The hostels are extremely posh, clean, well equipped with good beds, large cupboards, and desks. The washrooms are cleaned twice a day. The canteens have options for North or South Indian food and are well served with ample of options. Vegetarian food is available.
Faculty: It is one of the 3 colleges in the entire India that offers the course of genetic counseling along with biomedical genetics. Teachers are professional and always available during the working days. There are specialised faculty members for subjects such as genetic counseling, genetics in infertility, etc. The lectures are conducted using presentations and videos along with explanations. The material for the course, however, is always available on the student account that is updated by the faculty regularly. The curriculum is very well-designed, comparable to international courses, and covers all the necessary subjects. Along with the fixed courses, students are free to select their electives, that are however subject to availability.
Other: Given all the pros, the only issue is that rules for boys and girls differ a lot. Our campus in time is 6 pm, the one for boys was way later. Same applies to the hostel rules as well. That said, the campus is secure with many guards patrolling. Also, it is not very far from Chennai and Pondicherry which is an advantage.

A university with good infrastructure, best professors and well equipped labs.
Placements: There were hardly any placements for the field of genetic counselling. We had to find the job on our own and also the internships which we did. A number of placements came for the engineering field from various companies like TCS, Capgemini, etc.
Infrastructure: Our university has well equipped laboratories with all the updated machines. It has more number of hostels for students with furnished apartments to stay and clean bathrooms. The university has many classrooms along with basketball, badminton courts and other sports facilities. There are also waste bins inside the campus to ensure cleanliness in the campus. The library is the best place to study as it is fully air conditioned and has the perfect environment to study. It provides with all great varieties of novels, study materials, reference books along with the e-book facility.
Faculty: The curriculum matched the international standards. For example, we had similar kind of subjects for genetic counselling as the subjects present in the course of universities in USA. Faculty members were always helpful to the students and ready to help whenever needed. We also had clinical rotations for one month which gave us an opportunity to learn more about the field.

Good management, infrastructure, and facilities.
Placements: About 5 percent of students were placed with packages of 13 LPA, 7 LPA, and 9 LPA. I had no proper idea about all the companies, only a few of my friends got placed, likely 4 from the whole class, while the rest pursued clinical-side internships or non-clinical lab setup internships in VIT campus, and a few chose out-of-campus opportunities.
Infrastructure: The infrastructure was good overall, and the library was the most pleasing place. Hostel facilities were good, though the food quality needed improvement. Medical facilities were available 24/7 because of the clinic on campus, and fests and sports were arranged frequently.
Faculty: Professors were helpful, qualified, and knowledgeable. 50 percent passing mark was required to avoid backlogs in every subject. The level and pattern of papers varied according to the subject, professors, and the way they wanted us to present.
Other: I chose this course to become a Genetic Counsellor. Arranging patient interactions for case studies would have been better. For students on the non-clinical side, the course and placements were helpful.
