BHMS FAQs
Q. What is BHMS?
A. BHMS, or Bachelor of Homeopathic Medicine and Surgery, is an undergraduate degree program in the field of homeopathy. The duration of the BHMS course is typically five and a half years, which includes a one-year compulsory internship. During the BHMS course, students study various subjects such as Anatomy, Physiology, Pathology, Microbiology, Materia medica, organon of Medicine, Homeopathic Pharmacy, and Repertory.
The BHMS syllabus is designed to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the human body and its diseases, as well as the principles and techniques of homeopathic treatment.
BHMS course is a rigorous and comprehensive program that equips students with the knowledge and skills to practice homeopathy effectively. BHMS offers a holistic approach to healthcare, focusing on individualized treatment and promoting natural healing. As the popularity of alternative medicine continues to grow, BHMS provides an opportunity for aspiring healthcare professionals to make a meaningful impact in the field of homeopathy.
Q. Can a BHMS doctor prescribe allopathy medicine?
A. BHMS stands for Bachelor of Homeopathic Medicine and Surgery. Homeopathy is a system of alternative medicine that uses highly diluted substances to stimulate the body's healing mechanisms. Allopathy, on the other hand, refers to the conventional system of medicine that is commonly practiced by doctors of modern medicine.
The question of whether a BHMS doctor can prescribe allopathy medicine is a complex and controversial one. In many countries, including India, where BHMS is a recognized medical degree, BHMS doctors are legally allowed to prescribe certain allopathic medicines. In India, the Central Council of Homeopathy has allowed BHMS doctors to be trained in certain aspects of modern medicine, including the use of certain allopathic drugs. This is known as the "crosspathy" system, which allows BHMS doctors to prescribe allopathic medicines in certain specified cases. However, this practice is not without its detractors, and there is ongoing debate within the medical community about the appropriateness and safety of allowing BHMS doctors to prescribe allopathic drugs.
Q. Can a BHMS doctor do MD?
A. Yes, after completing BHMS a candidate can opt for MD in homeopathy. The disciplines available are:
- Pharmacy
- Philosophy
- Materia Medica
- Paediatrics
- Practice of Medicine
- Psychiatry Repertory
Q. Is BHMS equal to MBBS?
A. BHMS and MBBS are both undergraduate medical degrees. However, they differ in terms of the approach to medicine and the areas of specialization.
MBBS is a traditional allopathic medical degree that focuses on diagnosing and treating diseases using conventional medical methods. It is a comprehensive and scientifically based program that equips students with the knowledge and skills to practice medicine in a wide range of fields. On the other hand, BHMS is a degree in homeopathy, which is a branch of alternative medicine.
BHMS and MBBS are not the same. BHMS is a degree in homeopathy, while MBBS is a degree in allopathic medicine. The choice between the two depends on personal preferences and career goals.
Q. How long does a BHMS degree take?
A. The BHMS programme lasts five and a half years. The degree also includes a one-year rotatory internship which is necssesary for candidates after passing the final degree examination.
The BHMS syllabus typically consists of both classroom lectures and practical training in homeopathic clinics. Students learn about the principles of homeopathy, including the concept of vital force, the law of similars, and the understanding of individual symptoms. They also study BHMS subjects such as anatomy, physiology, pathology, pharmacology, and clinical medicine.
In addition to the academic coursework, BHMS students are also required to complete a certain number of hours of clinical practice. This allows them to apply their theoretical knowledge in real-life situations and gain practical experience in treating patients.
Q. Do BHMS students do Surgery?
A. BHMSis a degree program that focuses on homeopathy, a system of alternative medicine. Homeopathy uses highly diluted substances to stimulate the body's self-healing mechanisms.
While BHMS graduates receive comprehensive training in homeopathy, they do not typically practice surgery. The primary focus of their education is on diagnosing and treating patients using homeopathic remedies. Surgery falls within the domain of allopathic medicine, which is the conventional system of medicine practiced by medical doctors (MDs).
MD graduates go through extensive training in surgical procedures, including both minor and major surgeries. They have a deep understanding of Anatomy, Physiology, and surgical techniques. This specialized training equips them to perform surgeries and handle related complications.
Q. Which is more difficult, MBBS or BHMS?
A. MBBS and BHMS are both undergraduate medical programs. While both programs have their own unique challenges, it can be difficult to determine which one is more difficult as it depends on various factors.
MBBS is a conventional medical program that focuses on allopathic medicine. The curriculum is rigorous and demands extensive knowledge and practical skills. The program also includes clinical rotations where students work in hospitals to gain hands-on experience.
On the other hand, BHMS is a program that focuses on homeopathy, a form of alternative medicine. The curriculum emphasizes holistic approaches to healthcare and requires students to understand the individual symptoms and characteristics of patients.
In terms of difficulty, both MBBS and BHMS programs require dedication, hard work, and a strong understanding of medical concepts. The difficulty level of both MBBS and BHMS depends on individual preferences, aptitude, and dedication. Some students may find the conventional approach of MBBS more challenging, while others may prefer the holistic approach of BHMS. It is essential to choose a medical program based on personal interest, career goals, and the kind of medical practice one wishes to pursue.
Q. Is the homoeopathic course difficult?
A. BHMS, which stands for Bachelor of Homeopathic Medicine and Surgery, is a course that focuses on both theoretical knowledge and practical skills in the field of homeopathic medicine. Like any other course, the level of difficulty can vary depending on various factors.
The difficulty of the BHMS course can be subjective and may vary from person to person. Some students may find certain aspects of the course challenging, while others may not. It ultimately depends on an individual's aptitude, dedication, and willingness to put in the required effort.
The BHMS curriculum covers subjects such as Anatomy, Physiology, Pathology, Homeopathic Pharmacy, Organon of Medicine, and Repertory. These subjects require a strong foundation in scientific knowledge and critical thinking skills. The course also includes clinical training, where students gain hands-on experience in diagnosing and treating patients using homeopathic principles. Additionally, the BHMS course requires students to stay updated with the latest research and advancements in the field of homeopathic medicine. While the BHMS course may pose challenges, it is important to note that with dedication, perseverance, and effective study strategies, students can overcome difficulties and succeed in their studies.
Q. Can BHMS doctor do MS?
A. A BHMS doctor is trained in the field of Homeopathy and is not typically eligible to pursue a MS degree. The MS degree is a postgraduate medical course that focuses on surgical techniques and procedures. BHMS doctors are trained in homeopathic medicine, which is a holistic approach to healthcare that uses natural substances to stimulate the body's healing powers.
While BHMS doctors may have a strong foundation in medical knowledge and clinical skills, the MS degree requires specialized training in surgical disciplines such as general surgery, orthopedic surgery, neurosurgery, cardiothoracic surgery, and more. These surgical disciplines are not typically covered in the BHMS curriculum.
In conclusion, BHMS doctors do not generally pursue a Master of Surgery (MS) degree as it requires specialized training in surgical disciplines. However, they have the opportunity to further specialize and expand their expertise within the field of homeopathy through various advanced courses and certifications.
Q. What is the scope of BHMS?
A. The scope of BHMS in India can be assessed in the following ways:
- Clinical Practice: Many BHMS graduates can choose to set up their own private homeopathic clinics or work in existing ones.
- Government Jobs: BHMS graduates can also apply for government jobs in various healthcare departments at the state and central levels.
- Teaching and Research: After completing BHMS, you can pursue higher studies in homeopathy (MD Homeopathy) and then opt for teaching or research positions in homeopathic colleges and institutions.
- Pharmaceutical Industry: Some BHMS graduates find opportunities in the homeopathic pharmaceutical industry, working in the production, quality control, or research and development of homeopathic medicines.
- International Opportunities: Homeopathy is practiced in several countries around the world, so there may be opportunities for BHMS graduates to practice abroad or contribute to international homeopathic organizations.
Q. Is BHMS better than BSc Nursing?
A. BHMS graduates can work as homoeopathic practitioners, setting up their own clinics or working in existing ones. They diagnose and treat patients using homeopathic remedies. Career opportunities are primarily in the field of homoeopathy.
BSc Nursing graduates have a wide range of career opportunities in healthcare. They can work in hospitals, clinics, nursing homes, home healthcare, public health, and even research and teaching positions. Nursing is a highly versatile and in-demand profession.
