All India Institute of Medical Sciences, as the name suggests, are the institutes of national importance. There are a total of 26 AIIMS in the country from which 20 are operational, and 6 are in the developmental stage. AIIMS Delhi, AIIMS Bhopal, AIIMS Jodhpur, and AIIMS Patna are the most prominent among all. The full form of AIIMS is All India Institute of Medical Sciences. The AIIMS are the most valuable medical colleges across the nation in terms of medical research, faculty experience, training standards and the cost of MBBS courses. Most of the candidates appearing in the NEET exam dream of getting a government seat in the AIIMS. The NEET Re-Exam 2026 will be conducted on June 21 and the NEET re-exam admit card was released on June 14.

The MBBS seats of AIIMS are included in the NEET exam. Some of the AIIMS have already started the Nursing Courses, such as AIIMS Vijaypur, Jammu.  There are some AIIMS in India which have started to offer classes, but are still under construction. Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated six AIIMS college in India, namely, AIIMS Vijaypur, AIIMS Rajkot, AIIMS Bathinda, AIIMS Rae Bareily and AIIMS Kalyani in February 2024. The AIIMS Vijaypur, Jammu, launched its BSc Nursing course from the academic year 2025 itself. 

Until 2019, AIIMS used to conduct its own MBBS entrance exam. However, the AIIMS MBBS entrance exam was scrapped in 2019, and admissions have been conducted through the  National Eligibility Entrance Test (NEET) since the academic year 2021-22. On the other hand, the admissions to post-graduate courses at AIIMS are taken through INI CET. The INI SS exam is held for admission to Super Speciality courses. When was AIIMS established in India?

The first AIIMS in India was established under the Act of Parliament, 1956. The functions and objectives of the institute were defined in this act, thus giving it an autonomous status. Later in 2003, the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY) planted the seeds for the expansion of the most esteemed medical institution in India and led to the establishment of other AIIMS campuses. 

List of AIIMS Colleges in India

Candidates may not have an idea about the total number of existing AIIMS. Barring AIIMS Delhi, all AIIMS in India are new ones. All of these new AIIMS campuses came into existence after 2012. Some of them are still at the under-development stage and are yet to be fully operational. The table below contains the list of AIIMS, their year of establishment.

List of AIIMS in India in NIRF Ranking

The AIIMS Delhi has been seated at the top position in the NIRF Ranking for eight years in a row, and others are expected to join the league of top medical colleges of India in the future. Even for NIRF Ranking 2025, which was released on September 4, 2025, AIIMS Delhi was named the Number 1-ranked medical college in India. The rankings for AIIMS Rishikesh and AIIMS Bhubaneswar have improved. On the other hand, AIIMS Jodhpur's rank dropped by three positions in the top medical colleges in India. In the NIRF Ranking, top AIIMS in India are AIIMS Delhi, AIIMS Jodhpur, AIIMS Rishikesh, AIIMS Bhopal, AIIMS Patna, AIIMS Raipur and AIIMS Bhubaneshwar, falling within the Top 50 Medical Colleges in India. As can be seen from the above table, the NIRF rankings of AIIMS Jodhpur, AIIMS Bhubaneswar, AIIMS Rishikesh, AIIMS Bhopal and AIIMS Raipur improved; AIIMS Patna slipped by one position. Rest of the AIIMS institutes have not made their debut in the NIRF Ranking yet. On the other hand, AIIMS Delhi has also topped the chart in the NIRF Dental Ranking.

How to Take Admission to AIIMS in India?

Admission to the courses offered by AIIMS in India is through exams like NEET UG, INI CET, and others. The Institute has a separate ‘Examination Section’ which is a competent authority for conducting these entrance tests and the corresponding counselling sessions. The government is setting up new AIIMS institutes with the objective of making medical education affordable. The government is also aiming to increase undergraduate and post-graduate seats in medical colleges, including AIIMS, to fill the gap in the number of doctors across the country, who in turn will help people to avail accessible healthcare facilities.
