IIT Kharagpur offers a Joint M.Tech-PhD or MCP-PhD programme with 42 specialisations at the PG level, requiring a valid GATE exam score for admission. Eligible students with a CGPA of 8 and above in first year can pursue a written test and/or interview for potential enrollment in the PhD programme. Those not qualifying for PhD can continue the two-year MTech/MCP programme. Successful PhD candidates must fulfil the academic requirements of the MTech/MCP programme before being enrolled in the PhD, and both degrees are awarded upon PhD completion.

IIT Kharagpur Joint MTech/MCP PhD Admission 2026: How to Apply?
To apply for the Joint MTech/ MCP-PhD programmes, candidates are required to go through the online GATE application process via its official website (https://gateoffice.iitkgp.ac.in/jmp/). Candidates are required to register in the Common Offer Acceptance Portal (COAP - https://coap.iitd.ac.in) first before applying for Joint MTech/ MCP-PhD programmes in the institute (https://gateoffice.iitkgp.ac.in/jmp). COAP registration number is required to apply for admission to the Institute.
The application fee is INR 500 for GE/EWS/OBC Male/ Transgender candidates and INR 250 for all Female or PwD/SC/ST candidates.
- The application fee is non-refundable.
- Fee payment has to be made online and all other necessary qualifying certificates and documents such as caste certificates, PwD certificates, etc. must be scanned and uploaded at the time of submitting the application
- Hardcopy of the application and documents is not required. However, applicants are advised to keep a copy of the completed application form for their records.

Yes, IIT Kharagpur does accept GATE scores for admission to its M.Tech programme. Applicants must have a valid GATE score relevant to the discipline of their qualifying degree. In cases where there is no specific GATE paper available for a particular discipline, XE/XL/XH papers of the GATE examination can be considered. GATE is the accepted entrance exam for admission to IIT Kharagpur's M.Tech programme.
IIT Kharagpur offers a joint MTech/ MCP PhD programme to students who have completed their UG degree in the relevant stream. Under this programme, at the end of the first year, interested students with a CGPA of 8.0 and above are eligible to appear for a written test and/or interview to check their suitability to enrol for PhD. Those who do not qualify for PhD can continue with their two-year MTech/MCP programme. Students selected for PhD will have to complete the two-year academic requirements of MTech/ MCP programme before enrolment for PhD. For these students, the MTech/MCP and PhD degrees will be awarded together upon successful completion of PhD. The programme is open to students of all categories with a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering/ Technology/ Architecture/ MSc or equivalent professional degrees (AMIE, etc.) with a valid GATE score.
