The National Institute of Design application form for NID DAT 2026 is closed for B.Des and M.Des programmes on its website. NID DAT Application fee will be around INR 3,000 for all the candidates. Application forms were available at admissions.nid.edu/NIDA2026/.  

When applying for the exam, one of the requirements is to upload documents, including a photograph and signature. Given that there are specific requirements for uploading the documents, for instance, size and format, you simply can’t upload the document as it is. If it doesn’t meet the requirements, you have to make the adjustments and then upload it in the proper format.

About NID DAT 2026 Entrance Exam

The schedule for the NID DAT 2026 exam is released on the website. The NID DAT (Prelims) 2026 exam is to be conducted on December 21, 2025. The exam is conducted in paper-and-pencil/pen format across 17 cities in the country. Admit card will be issued on December 11, 2025.

The candidate can select their choice of exam city when filling the application form. Admit cards for NID DAT will be released in the last week of December 2025.

Q:   How to fill the NID DAT application form? Also, what is the exam fee?

NID DAT application form is closed for 2026-2027.

To register for NID DAT, candidate has to 

  1. Get registered:  Candidate had to get registered using their email ID and mobile number.
  2. Log-in and fill the form - Fill in all the necessary sections in the form: academic, personal, and contact details. Also, select an exam centre of your choice.
  3. Upload documents - Follow specified format and specification when uploading documents like photographs and signatures.
  4. Pay the exam fee to complete the application process. NID DAT 2026 fee is expected to be around Rs. 3000 for open, and Rs. 1500 for reserved-category candidates. A late fee of 50% more than can be charged by NID for registration if the application forms are not filled out after the deadline.

Admission to the NIDs is conducted through the NID Entrance Examination. The NID exam has two stages - the candidate first appears in the DAT Prelims. Scores of the NID DAT Prelims are used to then shortlist candidates for DAT Mains. The final merit list for NID DAT 2026 will be prepared by giving weightage to Mains.

The NID DAT 2026 admit card will carry the following like the application number, Candidate's name, Roll number, Date of birth, Name of the course applied for admission, Reporting time for exam, Date of exam, Exam duration, GATE closing time, Test center code, NID DAT test centre address, Photograph, and Signature. Additionally, it will also contain the Dos and Donts for candidates inside the exam venue. On the day of the NID DAT exam, the candidate needs to report at the exam center as per the reporting time mentioned on the admit card. Candidates arriving at the exam after the exam has commence may not be allowed entry inside the exam venue.

Q:   How to prepare for the NID DAT Prelims?

As per NID DAT exam pattern, the design entrance test is conducted in two stages: NID Prelims and NID Mains. 

To prepare for the B. Des and M.Des programme, candidates need to follow these tips.

  • Follow NID syllabus
  • Get familiar with the exam pattern, including the types of questions asked, section-wise and topic-wise weightage, mode of exam, marking scheme, etc.
  • Prepare a study plan taking into account time left for the exam. 
  • Practice mock tests and solve previous year's papers.

What will happen if I don’t meet NID DAT 2026 Document specification?

The National Institute of Design has prescribed some specific requirements for uploading the NID DAT 2026 application documents. This includes the file size and format.

For instance, it is prescribed that the signature should be in JPG/JPEG format and the size should be between 50 and 200 kb. Now, if you don’t meet the requirements, say, if the file size is more than 200 kb, you will not be able to upload the document.

If you fail to upload the document, you won’t be able to move to the next stage of the NID DAT 2026 application process. So, make sure that you format the documents as per the required specifications before proceeding to fill out the application form.

Now, a coaching institute cannot exactly teach you to be creative or become innovative. Instead, with a little effort these skills can learn these skills yourself. Also, a major thrust of the design aptitude test is to evaluate the drawing skills of the candidate. So, make it a point to work on your design skills, including learning how to draw lines, shadow, figure, gesture, cartoon drawing, etc. When practicing drawing, also keep a tab on the drawing speed, as it will help you complete the paper in the allotted time.

NID DAT Application Form 2026 - What if I upload the Wrong documents?

  • The candidate is urged to upload the correct and verifiable documents only
  • However, if the candidate indulges in forgery and uploads fake documents, he or she is liable to be disqualified. Also, criminal charges may be imposed on such candidates.
  • The documents furnished by the candidate will be verified at the time of NID DAT 2026 counselling and seat allotment. If any anomaly/inconsistency is found, the candidate has to justify their actions. 

Can I edit uploaded documents during NID DAT 2026 Application correction window?

  • Yes, the candidate can edit or upload fresh documents during the NID DAT 2026 application correction window if they have filled anything incorrectly.
  • The National Institute of Design will open the NID DAT application correction 2026 option from December 2, 2025 to December 04, 2025.
  • Candidates should keep in mind that they won’t be able to edit the program applied for admission, name, date of birth, email ID, and registered mobile number during the correction window.

But exam officials will also accept other government ids like Driving License, Passport, etc. The list of acceptable ids will be mentioned on the NID DAT 2026 admit card. The security personal at the NID DAT exam center will verify the documents before allowing the candidate entry inside the exam center. Any candidate who fails to produce the admit card and id proof will not be allowed to take the DAT Prelims exam.

The National Institute of Design (NID) is conducting the DAT Prelims exam in a center-based mode across 17 cities in India.

How to apply for NID DAT 2026?

To apply for NID DAT B.Des and M.Des Programme 2026, follow these steps

  1. Get registered - You will have to SELECT the program of study, nationality, category, PwD status, DOB, name, email ID, and mobile number to get registered.
  2. Fill up the form - Upon registration, you need to log in to the candidate account and fill in personal, academic, and communication details. Also, select an exam city from the drop-down menu.
  3. Upload documents - Next, you need to upload your signature, photograph, and a few other documents.
  4. Pay the application fee - Finally, pay the NID DAT application fee to complete the application process.

Note that unless you duly complete the application process, the NID DAT admit card will not be issued to you.

Other Backward Class-Non Creamy Layer (OBCNCL), Scheduled Caste (SC), Scheduled Tribe (ST) - the candidate must be born on or after 1 July 2002.

Note: In case of foreign nationals applying for admission under the Overseas (Supernumerary) Category, the candidate must be born on or after 1 July 2005.
