GATE Preparation Tips for Mechanical Engineering

Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) is one of the key exams for those planning to pursue various postgraduate and doctorate level courses from the premier institutes in the country. Clearing GATE 2023 with a good score could get you admission into institutes, including the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bangalore, all Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), all National Institutes of Technology (NITs) and various Central universities.

For mechanical engineers, GATE 2023 can act as a one-stop solution as a good score can land them into a good institute and also act as a gateway to PSU recruitment. Q:   I am in 2nd year of electrical engineering. How should I prepare for GATE?
A:
It is good that you have taken the initiative early. That shows your enthusiasm. Now that you have decided to take the test you must reflect the thought "Why exactly do I want to write GATE?" There are two perspectives to that question- 1. Decent score to get a good job 2. For further studies and if you are interested in research, it will be a good start. Since you are in your second year, try joining an institute for guidance and attend the classes. Prefer going to the crowded ones for a better GATE score and low understanding if you want an immediate job. (Or) Go to a private tutorial who have less number of students and give more specific interest in feeding in the basics or the base of fundamental engineering. Here you will learn how things work instead of mugging up formulae. Try searching for applications on your smart phone or laptop that keeps you updated about the exam. Believe me there are lot of such applications. Although still in second year I wont recommend you to waste time in interesting yet not so important topics in your curriculum Now these points that I mention will be of utmost importance. 1. Take down the syllabus of your specified course and stick to the syllabus. 2. Make sure you make one and only one notebook per subject, lets say its the fair notebook and you must keep it as a relic. Whatever you enter into this notebook should be very important points and no rough work or rubbish. Keep a rough note too to do those things. 3. Start watching videos from NPTEL. Its free and the best as far as I can go. 4. Once you start doing it enrol in a class and always attend it. Never miss a class. 5. Go slow take your time you have plenty of it.
Q:   What if a candidate faces difficulty downloading the GATE admit card?
A:
Students might face some problems while downloading the GATE hall ticket 2024. The problem might be due to slow internet connectivity or a heavy load on the server. In such situations, candidates should try downloading the admit card after a short duration. In case any candidate forgets their application ID/Enrollment ID or password, they can reset it. In case a candidate has forgotten their password, they can reset it from the GOAPS portal. Candidates need to click on the "Forgot Password" link, after which they will be redirected to create a new password. Know more:https://www.shiksha.com/engineering/gate-exam-admit-card.

Know GATE 2023 exam pattern

It is important for every aspirant to be aware of the GATE 2023 Exam Pattern before starting their preparation. The GATE exam has a mix of different types of questions, including one mark/two mark questions, multiple-choice questions and Numerical Answer Types (NAT).

There are a total of 65 questions that candidates need to answer within three hours (180 minutes). This means the candidate also needs to prepare how to manage their time during the exam so that they do not miss any questions. Experts suggest that you should not spend too much time on a question. If you can’t solve a question, leave it and move to the next one.

Prioritise sections to be attempted

With a focus on the technical subjects, in this case, Mechanical Engineering, an aspirant must not ignore the General Aptitude (GA) section. It is suggested that candidates must start from the first question and try to finish the GA section as soon as possible. It will help them to allot more time to the Mechanical Engineering section and also, within a few minutes, they can easily score 9-11 marks. A sufficient amount of time will make an aspirant confident while attempting the technical section, in turn leading to a good score in the section.

Number of questions needed to be answered for a good rank

Attempting more questions is not a parameter of getting a good rank, rather answering a significant number of questions correctly within the designated time is. This strategy will help GATE 2023 aspirants to score well in the exam. Remember, a good rank in the GATE 2023 exam can be secured by attempting questions with minimum or zero negative markings.

Experts suggest that candidates must at least attempt more than 45 questions that they are confident about to fetch a good rank.

After analysing GATE previous year's question papers of Mechanical Engineering, it can be said that there are more NAT questions. These questions are very important as no negative marks will be deducted for answering these questions wrongly. So, candidates must attempt all NAT questions in the GATE Mechanical Engineering Paper.

Focus on important sections/topics

GATE 2023 Mechanical Engineering syllabus is quite vast that includes many sections and topics. The weightage of each section/topic varies depending on its importance.

With the help of previous years' question papers, candidates can understand the trends of questions across sections. Revising the complete syllabus, with greater emphasis on important topics, is the key. Revision of syllabus may include attempting mock tests, revising formulas etc.

Engineering Mathematics can help candidates score better so it must be revised thoroughly as candidates can gain marks easily from this section with lesser effort.

Don't try guesswork

Guesswork is the worst method to find out an answer to any question when attempting a GATE exam. In fact, candidates must take care of this practice even while attempting mock tests. They should not guess answers to any questions while attempting mock tests and this will help them restrict themselves from the same during the exam.

Avoid any kind of stress

Any form of stress during the three hours of the GATE 2023 exam will destroy your years of hard work and act as a hindrance to realising your dream. Try to remain as calm as possible during the exam to remember formulas and concepts. In the case at any stage, a candidate is unable to recollect concepts, they must take a moment to calm down and again start attempting the paper.
