On student forums and communities, many aspirants and GATE toppers have shared their strategies- DSA and CN together often account for 15 to 20 marks (approx) in the GATE CS question paper.

DSA includes core concepts like stacks, queues, trees, heaps, recursion, and searching/sorting algorithms: areas known for their predictability and consistency in GATE questions. Similarly, CN covers OSI layers, TCP/IP, IP addressing, congestion control, and protocols, all of which appear every single year.

For exam like, GATE, where each mark plays a vital role, preparing for these topics are great if mastered properly. Many students have stated that even if you prepate DSA, TN, and CO, you can easily secure 50+ marks in GATE CS. Hence, the number says a lot.

Both data structures and computer networks in the GATE 2026 examination can offer clear and structured learning paths. Students can refer to top GATE CS books, like Galvin for CN, Narasimha Karumanchi, Roberto Tamassia Michael T. Goodrich for data structures and algorithms, followed by PYQs and mock test papers for effective preparation. These topics reward consistent practice.

Best Books for GATE Data Structures and Algorithms

Here are some recommended books for GATE DSA (Data Structures and Algorithms) from toppers and experts -

  • Data Structures and Algorithms Made Easy by Narasimha Karumanchi
  • Introduction to Algorithms by Thomas H Cormen, Charles E.Leirserson, Ronald L. Riveset, and Clifford Stein
  • Data Structures using C by Reema Thareja
  • Data Structures and Algorithms in Java by Robert Lafore

Best Books for GATE Computer Networks

Aspirants can check out the top books for GATE computer networks (CN) below -

  • Computer Networking: A top-down approach by James Kurose and Keith Ross
  • Data Communications and Networking by Behrouz A. Forouzan
  • C Programming Language by Kernighan and Ritchie

Qualify for GATE and Attend Interviews

This is where DSA and CN truly shine. Unlike subjects like Compiler Design or Engineering Mathematics (which are important but not interview-friendly), DSA and CN have direct career applications. Top companies like Google and Amazon look for applicants, as their work lies mainly around these topics. These companies want candidates with strong critical thinking and ability skills.

If you’re targeting PSU recruitment through GATE (like ISRO, BARC, DRDO, NIC, etc.), many technical interviews include DSA-based coding tests and CN-based system design or theory questions. Even in IIT interviews for M.Tech CS, CN questions are common, particularly around TCP protocols, subnetting, and error control.

Let's talk about Paychecks

Let’s talk about money. Whether you're aiming for a software development role, a network engineer job, or GATE 2026 PSU recruitment, DSA, and CN are great return of investment. Employers love candidates who can think out of the box. These topics are not just restricted to academics but play a great role in job hunt process.

If you are underconfident about completing the GATE syllabus 2026, start with the two topics that offer the best return on your time: Computer Networks and Data Structures & Algorithms. They are great for academics and interview preparation.

So, next time you scroll past a DSA meme or a CN doubt thread, maybe do not just upvote and move on. Get an in-depth of it. Master the GATE CSE fundamentals.

The barcode present in the GATE admit card 2026 carries the candidate's information. It is required for a faster verification process and fraud prevention. So, make sure it does not get tampered. Carry multiple copies in case your GATE 2026 hall ticket is torn or tampered.

Candidates who are appearing for the GATE exam must carry a valid ID proof along with a passport-size photograph, transperant water bottle, and pen (blue or black) along with GATE 2026 hall ticket. We advise to carry atleast two to three copies of admit card to the centre.
