What Is NIRF Ranking

National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) is India’s own ranking mechanism which evaluates institutions in five criteria. The NIRF ranking is released in several categories which include Overall, Universities, Engineering, Management, Medical, Law, Pharmacy, Architecture and Planning, Dental, Agriculture and Allied Sectors, Research Institutions, Innovation, and the recently introduced Sustainability category, among others.

The NIRF Engineering ranking is one of the most closely watched due to high number of students choosing engineering course and the intense competition for admission through JEE Main, JEE Advanced, state-level entrance exams.

NIRF Ranking Parameters and Weightage 2026

The ranking of institutes is done considering five parameters which remains constant across all categories.

Branch-Wise Specialization in Delhi NCR Engineering Colleges

When it comes to admission, most students actually choose a branch at a college and not college alone. Here's the comprehensive information about branches offered in Delhi-NCR engineering colleges.

Computer Science & Engineering (CSE) / IT / AI-ML

The CSE program at IIT Delhi is undoubtedly the best in the region as well as in India. IIT Delhi CSE program is backed by depth in research, highly qualified faculty, and industry recognition. IIT Delhi CSE regularly ranks in the top three or four CSE departments in India. Also IIT Delhi is the second best institute in the country as per IIT NIRF ranking.

IIIT-Delhi is the institute with programs specifically in information technology domain.  It provides courses in CSE, CSAI (Computer Science & Artificial Intelligence), and CSAM (Computer Science & Applied Mathematics). IIT Delhi ranks 63 across India as per IIIT NIRF ranking.

DTU CSE, together with new IT and AI-ML programs is one of the best-placed branch across colleges in Delhi-NCR.

NSUT CSE is also one of the most competitive branches in Delhi-NCR institutes. CSE/IT seats of the Bhagwan Parshuram campus of NSUT is also nice.

In Jamia Millia Islamia, CSE and ECE branches are also among the best.

Electronics & Communication Engineering (ECE)

Both IIT Delhi and DTU is the preferred institute for ECE due to their strong tie-ups with recruiters from the sectors of semiconductors, VLSI, and telecommunications. ECE at NSUT also is one of their top branches. Placement records for both DTU Delhi and NSUT in ECE have been good, even though they fall behind in numbers compared to CSE.

Mechanical and Civil Engineering

IIT-Delhi is the most preferred institute for Mechanical and Civil due to placement at ONGC, BHEL etc. DTU too has a legacy of producing quality mechanical and production engineers. However, the placements in Civil Engineering are comparatively low as compared to those in CSE and ECE domains.

Data Science, AI and ML

Data Science, Artificial Intelligence (AI), and Machine Learning (ML) are being offered as independent domains of study in various colleges. Institutes like DTU, NSUT, and many more private universities such as Amity, Sharda, and Galgotias offer these courses. The subject Mathematics and Computing is still a niche domain and has relatively high cutoffs at NSUT and IIT Delhi.
Private University Strengths
Private universities like Amity, Sharda, Galgotias, Jaypee Noida, KIET Ghaziabad, and Manav Rachna provide attractive placement opportunities for CSE and other allied branches like AI & ML, Data Science.

However, for branches like Mechanical and Civil engineering, the placement is comparatively low. Prestigious government universities like DTU, NSIT, and IIT Delhi also have similar trends. Therefore, if one wants to become a core-engineer, it is always better to choose a poor-ranked government university rather than a better marketed private university.

Admission Process for NIRF-Ranked Delhi NCR Colleges

Admission to Delhi-NCR engineering college is based on different paths. Check the admission process here
Admission in IIT Delhi is through JEE Advanced exam. Students have to first qualify JEE Main before they can appear in JEE Advanced. The allotment of seats is through Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) counselling.

Admission to colleges like NIT Delhi, DTU, NSUT, IIIT-Delhi, IGDTUW, and DSEU is through JEE Mains score. The allotment of seats is done through JAC Delhi (Joint Admission Counselling, Delhi). JEE Advanced is not required for these institutes. NIT Delhi is ranked 65 as per NIT NIRF ranking.
Candidates must note that 85% of seats in DTU, NSUT, IIIT-Delhi, IGDTUW, and DSEU are reserved for candidates who completed Class 12 from a school within the National Capital Territory (NCT) of Delhi. The remaining 15% are open to all-India candidates. Students from Noida, Gurugram, or Faridabad are not counted as "Delhi region" candidates for this quota.
