What Is JEE 75% Criteria?
The JEE 75% criteria is the requirement of marks in class 12 board exams to get admission in various engineering colleges. Criteria for 75% vary in JEE Mains and Advanced exam.
According to the information brochure issued by JEE Mains 2027, students can appear in the exam without fulfilling the 75 percent criteria in class 12.
For JEE Advanced 2027, the 75 percent aggregate marks in Class 12 or being among the top 20 percentile is NOT the eligibility criteria to appear in the exam.
Is 75% Marks Compulsory to Appear in JEE Main 2027 Exam?
One of the most common confusions regarding the JEE is that one cannot apply in the exam without getting 75 percent marks. Students should know the distinction between registration, qualifying, and admission to clear this confusion. Let's have a closer look at this distinction.
A candidate who has either passed or is appearing in the 12th with physics and mathematics along with the one subject of choice can apply for JEE Main, provided they meet all other eligibility criteria.
Thus, scoring less than 75% does not mean you cannot write JEE Main. In order to understand this concept better, students should consider three different aspects of JEE Main 2027 exam:
Writing JEE Main: It only means registration and taking the exam.
Qualifying JEE Main: It means securing the required score and rank in JEE Mains
Getting Admission: This is the step where JEE Main counseling takes place and where 75% becomes relevant.

Is 75% Marks Needed for JEE Advanced?
Another common topic of confusion is JEE Advanced eligibility. Question that usually comes up is - Is 75% needed for JEE Advanced 2027?
According to information available on the official website, candidates NEED NOT have minimum 75% marks in class 12 for appearing in JEE Advanced.
This is like JEE Main, where candidates do not need 75% marks to give the examination, but this is necessary for getting admission into IITs.
Is 75% Marks Needed for All Categories
Requirement of 75% marks in class 12 is for General category and OBC-NCL, EWS candidates. For reserved category candidates from SC, ST and PwD, minimum percentage requirement is 65%.
What If My Class 12 Percentage is Below 75%
While scoring below 75% is definitely disappointing, it need not put an end to your engineering dreams. There are still many other alternatives available.
Alternative 1- Improvement Examinations: Many boards provide candidates with the facility of improvement examinations. This allows candidates to improve their aggregate percentage and make them eligible for institutions requiring higher marks. Improvement examinations are one of the most sought after methods for candidates taking a drop year to enter IITs, NITs and IIITs.
Alternative 2- Reappearing as a Private Candidate: Some boards provide candidates with the facility to reappear in one or more subjects. Candidates can concentrate on weak subjects and improve their overall percentage.
Alternative 3- Taking a Drop Year: Many candidates prefer improving their board percentage and giving proper time to JEE preparation. Retake the examination next year. Proper planning for drop year can help improve both your board percentage and ranks in entrance examination.
Alternative 4- Look for Alternate Institutes: There are many engineering colleges which do not have admission criteria like some centrally funded institutes.
75% Eligibility Criteria for Droppers
The JEE Main and Advanced eligibility criteria of 75% marks remains the same for droppers as well. Most of the aspirants who take drop year feel that their board marks will always restrict them. In fact, droppers are eligible to appear in JEE Mains as well as JEE Advanced.
Top 20 Percentile Criteria for JEE Main and Advanced
Marks obtained in a certain board percentage might mean completely different thing in terms of percentile from other board. Through percentile criterion, candidates are compared to other candidates on basis of their board ecosystem only.
One of the most misunderstood criterion of JEE eligibility is top 20 percentile. Percentile is calculated separately for each board. Candidates are compared to other candidates in their own board rather than comparing them to all other candidates from all boards. Suppose top 20 percentile cutoff of Board A is 78% and that of Board B is 71%. Then a candidate obtaining 72% in Board B might be qualified through percentile criterion, whereas a candidate obtaining 78% in Board A will be required to clear same criterion.
